Salt of the Earth

Salt was incredibly valuable in Jesus’ time. It preserved food, enhanced flavor, and even symbolized purity. When Jesus calls His followers the salt of the earth, He’s reminding us of our unique purpose: to preserve the truth, enhance the world with God’s love, and live in a way that reflects His holiness.

But Jesus also warns that salt can lose its saltiness. This happens when we compromise our faith, neglect our relationship with God, or conform to the world. When we fail to live out our purpose, we lose our impact and witness.

I’ve had seasons where I felt my “saltiness” was fading, times when I got too caught up in the busyness of life and lost sight of God’s mission for me. But God, in His grace, always draws me back, reminding me of my calling to make a difference in the lives of others. Being salt isn’t about perfection, it’s about staying connected to the One who gives us purpose.

Reflection Questions

  1. How can you preserve your “saltiness” and live out your God-given purpose?
  2. In what ways can you enhance the lives of others with God’s love and truth?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for calling me to be the salt of the earth. Teach me to live in a way that preserves truth, reflects Your love, and glorifies You. Help me to stay connected to You and to fulfill the purpose You’ve given me. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Closing the Chapter

Six months ago, I faced a moment that marked the true end of reconciliation… my ex-wife remarried. I had held onto hope for a long time, even through the pain, thinking maybe God would bring restoration. But that door officially closed on August 12, 2024.

At first, the finality of it all felt overwhelming. I wondered why God hadn’t answered my prayers the way I’d hoped. But in the weeks and months that followed, I began to see His hand in ways I couldn’t before.

Isaiah 43:18-19 reminds us not to dwell on the past because God is always doing a new thing. That verse became an anchor for me. It helped me shift my focus from what was lost to what God was building in my life.

Today, I’m in a healthier, stronger place. I’ve learned that letting go isn’t about giving up… it’s about trusting God with the future. I’ve found joy in the present and hope for what’s ahead.

If you’re holding onto something that’s already gone, I encourage you to release it to God. Trust Him to do a new thing in your life. His plans are always better than anything we could imagine.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for teaching me to let go of the past and to trust You with the future. Help me to see the new things You are doing in my life and to walk forward in faith and joy. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Rejoicing in Persecution

Rejoicing in the face of persecution feels counterintuitive, but Jesus calls us to do exactly that. Why? Because persecution for His sake connects us to the prophets who came before us and assures us of a great reward in heaven.

There was a time when I faced criticism for sharing my faith at work. It stung to be misunderstood and judged, but I found peace in knowing I was honoring God. Instead of focusing on the rejection, I leaned into His Word and promises. That trial deepened my faith and gave me greater courage to share the gospel.

Jesus doesn’t promise an easy road for His followers, but He does promise His presence and eternal rewards. When we face persecution, we can rejoice because we’re walking in His footsteps. Our trials are temporary, but the joy of being with Him forever is eternal.

Reflection Questions

  1. How can you find joy in the midst of persecution or rejection?
  2. What does focusing on eternal rewards look like in your daily life?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the assurance of Your presence and promises, even in times of persecution. Teach me to rejoice in trials and to focus on the eternal rewards You’ve prepared for me. Help me to stand firm in faith and to glorify You in all circumstances. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Communication

In my marriage, one of the most significant challenges was communication. I wish I could say I always spoke with grace and patience, but there were times when frustration or pride got the better of me. I’ve replayed certain arguments in my mind, wondering how things might have turned out if I had chosen different words… or simply listened more.

After my divorce, God began to show me the power of words in a deeper way. I started noticing how my tone, even more than my words, impacted our daughter. If I came across as short or distracted, she would withdraw. But when I was intentional, looking her in the eyes and speaking with kindness, I could see her light up.

One night, after a particularly hectic day, I tucked our daughter into bed and asked her how she was feeling. “I’m okay, Daddy,” she said quietly, but I could tell she wasn’t. Instead of rushing to fix things, I simply said, “I’m here if you want to talk.” A few minutes passed, and then the floodgates opened. She shared how she felt caught between two homes and how hard it was to adjust.

That moment taught me an invaluable lesson: sometimes the most important part of communication is simply being present. Whether it’s with our children, our friends, or God, the act of truly listening can bring healing and connection.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for teaching me the value of communication. Help me to listen more and speak with grace and wisdom. May my words build others up and reflect Your love. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The Advocate

Jesus as “The Advocate” emphasizes His role as our defender and intercessor before the Father. When we fall short, He stands in our place, pleading on our behalf and covering us with His righteousness.

There have been times when I’ve felt unworthy to approach God because of my failures. In those moments, I’m reminded that Jesus is my Advocate. He doesn’t excuse my sin but lovingly steps in to remind me that His sacrifice has already paid the price.

A Defender of the Accused: Jesus protects us from the accusations of the enemy, declaring us forgiven and redeemed (Revelation 12:10).

An Intercessor for the Weak: As our Advocate, He intercedes for us, strengthening us in our weakness (Romans 8:34).

A Righteous Substitute: Jesus’ advocacy is based on His perfect righteousness, ensuring our acceptance before the Father.

Calling on the Advocate reminds us that we are never alone or without hope, no matter how far we fall.

The Resurrection and the Life

Jesus’ declaration as “The Resurrection and the Life” offers hope and assurance in the face of death and despair. This name reminds us of His power to bring life from what seems dead and to give us eternal life through faith in Him.

I’ve experienced moments when hope seemed out of reach, and life felt heavy with loss. Reflecting on this name of Jesus brought me comfort. He reminded me that no situation is beyond His power to redeem and restore, and no life is ever truly lost when it is in His hands.

Victory Over Death: Jesus’ resurrection assures us that death does not have the final say (1 Corinthians 15:55).

Life for the Present: The Resurrection and the Life bring renewal and restoration to our daily lives.

Hope for Eternity: Through faith in Jesus, we have the promise of eternal life with Him.

Our Son’s Birthday: Looking to the Future

Our boy turns 26 today, and as I reflect on his journey, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the man he’s become. From his accomplishments in the military to his academic achievements and beyond, he has shown what it means to live with dedication and perseverance.

While I celebrate his achievements, I’m also praying for his continued strength and reliance on God. The Cornerstone

Jesus as “The Cornerstone” signifies His role as the foundation of our faith and the church. In ancient construction, the cornerstone was the first stone laid, aligning and supporting the entire structure.

I’ve had moments where I felt like life’s foundation was crumbling beneath me. During those times, Jesus reminded me that He is my Cornerstone, the unshakable foundation on which I can build my life.

The Foundation of Our Faith: Jesus is the cornerstone of salvation, the basis of our relationship with God (Ephesians 2:20).

The Alignment of Our Lives: As the cornerstone, He aligns our priorities and purpose, guiding us to live in step with His will.

The Strength of Our Hope: When life feels uncertain, the Cornerstone offers stability and security, reminding us that we are firmly grounded in Him.

Calling on the Cornerstone challenges us to build our lives on Jesus, trusting in His strength and direction.

Joseph: Trusting God in the Pit

Joseph’s story has always been a reminder to me that God is faithful, even in the darkest moments. Sold into slavery by his brothers, falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife, and forgotten in prison, Joseph endured years of pain and rejection. Yet through it all, he trusted God’s plan.

When my marriage ended, I felt like I was in my own version of the pit. The dreams I had for my family, ministry, and future seemed shattered. I couldn’t see how any good could come from the pain. But like Joseph, I’ve learned that God is always working, even when we can’t see it.

Joseph didn’t let his circumstances define him. He remained faithful, using his gifts wherever he was… even in prison. Eventually, God raised him up, and Joseph became second-in-command in Egypt. The very brothers who betrayed him ended up bowing before him, fulfilling the dreams Joseph had years before.

Looking back on my own journey, I can see how God has been faithful. He’s used the pain to refine me, deepen my faith, and open doors I never would have imagined. Like Joseph, I’ve learned to trust that what the enemy meant for harm, God can use for good.

If you’re in a pit right now, hold on to this truth: God isn’t finished with your story. Trust Him, stay faithful, and watch how He brings beauty out of the ashes.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me through Joseph’s story that You are always working, even in the darkest moments. Help me to trust Your plan and remain faithful, knowing that You can turn any situation for good. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The Alpha and the Omega

The title “Alpha and Omega” highlights Jesus’ eternal nature and sovereignty over all creation. As the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, this name reminds us that He is the beginning and the end of everything.

This name has been a source of strength for me in times of uncertainty. When life feels like it’s spiraling out of control, remembering that Jesus holds the beginning and the end reassures me that He also holds every moment in between.

The Beginning of All Things: Jesus was present at creation, and through Him, all things were made (John 1:1-3).

The End of All Things: He is the culmination of God’s plan, ensuring that His purposes will be fulfilled.

The Lord of Every Moment: As Alpha and Omega, Jesus reminds us that He is with us through every season, holding our past, present, and future.

Calling on the Alpha and Omega encourages us to trust in His eternal power and to rest in His perfect plan for our lives.
