Hatred and Discord: Breaking the Cycle of Division

Hatred and discord are powerful tools the enemy uses to divide us. Whether it’s bitterness toward a specific person, animosity toward a group, or a general spirit of hostility, these works of the flesh keep us from reflecting the love of Christ.

I’ve experienced times when anger or resentment seemed justified. But holding onto hatred didn’t solve anything. It only hardened my heart and pushed me further from God’s peace. Discord thrives in an environment where people prioritize their opinions and agendas over unity and love.

Jesus calls us to a higher standard. He taught us to love our enemies, forgive those who hurt us, and seek peace with one another. Breaking the cycle of hatred and discord starts with surrendering our anger to God, asking Him to replace it with His love and grace.

Reflection Questions

  1. Are there areas of your life where hatred or discord has taken root?
  2. How can you be a peacemaker and reflect God’s love in divisive situations?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for teaching me to love as You love. Reveal any hatred or discord in my heart and help me to surrender it to You. Fill me with Your peace and grace, and teach me to be a peacemaker in every situation. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Witchcraft: Rejecting the Deception of Power

Witchcraft is often misunderstood as harmless fun, whether through movies, games, or curiosity about the supernatural. But the Bible is clear. Witchcraft and anything resembling it are an abomination to God because they seek power outside of Him.

At its core, witchcraft is about control… trying to manipulate circumstances, people, or outcomes through spiritual means apart from God. This can include things like horoscopes, tarot cards, crystals, or spells, which may seem innocent but are spiritually dangerous. Engaging in these practices opens the door to deception and distances us from the Holy Spirit.

True power comes from God alone. Seeking wisdom, guidance, or control through any other source dishonors Him and invites spiritual consequences. Instead of turning to counterfeit sources of power, we’re called to trust God’s sovereignty and seek His will in all things.

Reflection Questions

  1. Have you encountered areas of life where you or others have sought power or guidance apart from God?
  2. How can you stand firm in rejecting counterfeit spiritual practices and trusting in God’s sovereignty?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for being the source of all wisdom, power, and truth. Teach me to trust You fully and to reject anything that seeks to replace or compete with Your authority. Protect my heart and mind from deception, and help me to walk in obedience to Your Word. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Idolatry: Reclaiming Our Worship for God

Idolatry might seem like an outdated concept, something limited to ancient cultures worshiping golden statues. But the truth is, idolatry is alive and well today, it just looks different. An idol is anything we place above God in our hearts. It could be money, success, relationships, entertainment, or even good things like family or ministry if they take God’s rightful place.

I’ve experienced seasons where I unknowingly made idols out of things like work or approval. I justified it by saying I was doing it “for the Lord,” but in reality, my priorities were misaligned. God calls us to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30). Anything less is a distraction that pulls us away from true worship.

Overcoming idolatry starts with recognizing it. Ask God to reveal anything in your life that’s competing for His place. Then, surrender it to Him, inviting the Holy Spirit to redirect your heart and focus back to where it belongs… on Him.

Reflection Questions

  1. Are there areas in your life where something has taken priority over God?
  2. How can you refocus your worship and devotion solely on Him?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for reminding me that You alone are worthy of my worship. Reveal any idols in my life and help me to surrender them to You. Teach me to place You first in everything I do and to worship You with my whole heart. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Debauchery: Living for the Flesh Instead of the Spirit

Debauchery, often associated with wild living and excess, is more than just reckless behavior, it’s a mindset that prioritizes self-indulgence over God’s will. It reflects a life led by the flesh, consumed by desires for pleasure and excess, without regard for consequences or morality.

Our culture often glamorizes this lifestyle, portraying it as freedom or fun. But the Bible warns that debauchery leads to destruction, not fulfillment. I’ve seen how this work of the flesh can ruin lives, break relationships, and leave people feeling empty despite their indulgence.

True freedom isn’t found in indulging the flesh. It’s found in walking by the Spirit. When we surrender our desires to God and seek to live according to His will, we discover a joy and peace that excess and indulgence can never provide.

Reflection Questions

  1. In what areas of your life are you tempted to prioritize self-indulgence over God’s will?
  2. How can you use your freedom in Christ to serve Him and others instead of the flesh?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for calling me to freedom in Christ. Teach me to use that freedom to honor You and to serve others. Help me to resist the pull of self-indulgence and to live a life that reflects Your love and truth. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Impurity: Guarding Our Hearts and Minds

Impurity goes beyond outward actions, it starts in the heart. Jesus taught that even our thoughts can defile us, saying that lustful thoughts are equivalent to adultery (Matthew 5:28). Impurity manifests in many ways, including lust, greed, and an unclean conscience.

I’ve struggled with keeping my thoughts pure, especially when the world bombards us with messages and images that desensitize us to sin. It’s a battle we all face, but the good news is that God doesn’t just call us to purity… He empowers us to live it through His Spirit.

Guarding our hearts and minds requires intentionality. It means being mindful of what we watch, listen to, and entertain. It’s about asking God to create a pure heart within us and to transform our desires so that they align with His.

Reflection Questions

  1. In what areas of your life do you struggle with impurity, and how can you surrender them to God?
  2. What practical steps can you take to guard your heart and mind against impurity?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your grace that forgives and transforms me. Create in me a pure heart and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Teach me to guard my heart and mind, choosing what is holy and pleasing to You. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Sexual Immorality: A Misuse of God’s Gift

Sexual immorality is one of the most pervasive works of the flesh, and it’s often minimized or justified in today’s culture. But the Bible is clear. Sexual immorality, which includes any sexual activity outside God’s design for marriage between a man and a woman, is a sin that not only dishonors God but also harms us deeply.

I’ve seen how this sin can wreak havoc on lives, relationships, and families. It promises pleasure and freedom but delivers guilt, shame, and brokenness. Sexual immorality distorts God’s beautiful design for intimacy, reducing it to something selfish and fleeting instead of sacred and enduring.

The Holy Spirit calls us to flee from sexual immorality, not to flirt with it. This means guarding our hearts, setting boundaries, and relying on God’s strength to resist temptation. When we surrender this area of our lives to Him, we find true freedom and joy in living according to His design.

Reflection Questions

  1. How can you guard your heart and mind against sexual immorality in your daily life?
  2. What steps can you take to honor God’s design for intimacy in your relationships?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of intimacy and for creating it as a reflection of Your love and covenant. Teach me to honor You with my body, mind, and heart. Help me to flee from sexual immorality and to walk in purity and obedience to Your Word. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Introduction: The Struggle Between Flesh and Spirit

We all feel it. The inner battle between doing what’s right and giving in to our desires. This struggle between the flesh and the Spirit is one every believer faces. The works of the flesh, as described in Galatians 5:19-21, are not just sins but a pattern of living that leads us away from God.

The flesh represents our sinful nature, the part of us that resists God and craves self-gratification. These behaviors are the default mode of a heart not surrendered to the Spirit. But the good news is that through Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit, we can overcome the flesh and live in freedom.

In this series, we’ll explore the works of the flesh and learn how to identify, resist, and replace them with the fruit of the Spirit. This is not about perfection… it’s about walking daily in the Spirit, allowing Him to transform our hearts and lives.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where do you feel the strongest struggle between the flesh and the Spirit in your life?
  2. How can you invite the Holy Spirit into those battles?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of Your Spirit, who gives me the strength to overcome the desires of the flesh. Teach me to walk by the Spirit and to choose Your ways over my own. Help me to grow in grace, freedom, and faithfulness to You. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

True Love: God’s Perfect Example

The world often defines love as a feeling, but God shows us that true love is so much more. It’s sacrificial, unconditional, and rooted in action. 1 John 4:10 reminds us that God’s love is the ultimate example: He loved us so deeply that He sent His Son to die for us.

I’ve experienced glimpses of true love in my life. Moments of forgiveness, selflessness, and kindness. But even the best human love pales in comparison to the love God has for us. His love isn’t based on what we do or don’t do; it’s a constant, unwavering commitment to our well-being.

Understanding God’s love changes everything. It frees us from striving for approval, gives us confidence in our identity, and inspires us to love others with the same grace and compassion He shows us.

Reflection Questions

  1. How has God’s love transformed your understanding of love?
  2. How can you show God’s love to someone in your life this week?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for loving me with a perfect, unconditional love. Teach me to reflect that love in my relationships and to live in the freedom and confidence of being Your child. Help me to share Your love with those around me. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Sex in Movies: Where Do We Draw the Line?

Sexual content in movies is often excused as part of the “storyline” or “character development,” but as Christians, we need to ask if it’s worth the risk to our hearts and minds. God calls us to purity. Not just in actions but in thoughts and desires as well.

When we watch sexual scenes, we open the door to temptation, lust, and comparison. These images can linger in our minds, distorting our views on relationships and intimacy. Even if we think we’re unaffected, seeds are being planted that can harm our walk with God.

As believers, we’re called to flee from sexual immorality (1 Corinthians 6:18). This doesn’t mean isolating ourselves from all media, but it does mean being intentional about what we watch. Choosing movies that honor God protects our hearts and helps us live out His calling for purity.

Reflection Questions

  1. How do you discern whether a movie’s content aligns with God’s standard of purity?
  2. What boundaries can you set to protect your heart and mind from sexual immorality?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for calling me to a life of purity. Teach me to honor You with my thoughts, actions, and entertainment choices. Help me to flee from anything that could lead me away from Your truth. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.
