Purity: “How Far Is Too Far?”

“How far is too far?” It’s a question I’ve heard countless times in ministry, especially from young adults navigating dating and relationships. The world has a way of blurring boundaries, making it easy to justify small compromises. But Scripture is clear: God calls us to purity, not to see how close we can get to the line without crossing it.

When I think about this question, I realize it’s the wrong one to ask. Instead of focusing on the line, we should ask, “What can I do to honor God and the person I’m with?” Purity isn’t about restriction; it’s about reflecting God’s holiness in every area of our lives.

I’ve been single for a while now, and I’ll admit that staying pure isn’t always easy. But I’ve learned that setting clear boundaries and seeking accountability are essential. It’s not about legalism… it’s about protecting your heart and honoring God with your body.

If you’re struggling with this question, take it to God. Ask Him to guide your thoughts, actions, and relationships. When you prioritize His will, you’ll find the strength to walk in purity and the peace that comes with obedience.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me to walk in purity. Help me to set boundaries that honor You and to seek Your strength when temptation arises. Teach me to pursue relationships that reflect Your love and holiness. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The Weight of Watching Others Hurt

One of the hardest parts of this journey has been watching my children navigate their own pain. Seeing my son graduate from college without his mother there to celebrate was gut-wrenching. Watching my daughter wrestle with the changes in her world as she turned ten and entered junior high has been equally heartbreaking.

As a parent, I want to fix everything for them. I want to take away their hurt and make their lives whole again. But I’ve learned that sometimes the best thing I can do is simply be present. I can’t heal their hearts, but I can point them to the One who can.

God has used this season to teach me the importance of bearing each other’s burdens. It’s not about having all the answers or fixing everything, it’s about walking alongside those who are hurting, offering love, support, and prayers.

If you’re watching someone you love walk through pain, know that your presence matters more than your solutions. Trust that God is working, even when you can’t see it, and let Him carry the burdens you can’t.

Reflection Questions

  1. How can you support and encourage someone you love who is hurting?
  2. What burdens do you need to entrust to God rather than carrying on your own?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for teaching me to bear the burdens of those I love while trusting You to carry what I cannot. Help me to be present and to reflect Your love and compassion in every moment. Strengthen me as I walk alongside my children, pointing them to Your faithfulness. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

David: Leading with a Shepherd’s Heart (Part 2)

David’s journey from shepherd to king wasn’t just a change in position, it was a continuation of the heart he cultivated while tending sheep. The lessons he learned in the fields prepared him to lead a nation with humility, care, and reliance on God.

As a shepherd, David protected his flock from lions and bears, learning courage and faith. These same qualities guided him when he faced Goliath and later ruled as king. But perhaps the greatest insight into David’s heart as a shepherd is found in Psalm 23. Written from his own experience, this psalm paints a beautiful picture of God as the ultimate Shepherd, caring for and guiding His people.

David’s leadership wasn’t perfect, his failures were significant, but his heart for God remained steadfast. His story challenges us to lead with humility and to trust God as the Shepherd of our lives, guiding us through every valley and victory.

Reflection Questions

  1. How can you lead others with a heart of humility and care, as David did?
  2. In what ways can you trust God as your Shepherd in this season of life?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for being my Shepherd and for guiding me through every season of life. Teach me to lead with humility and to trust in Your care. Help me to reflect Your love and faithfulness in my relationships and responsibilities. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Leaving a Legacy of Life-Giving Words

Our words don’t just impact the present, they leave a legacy. The things we say can shape the lives of our children, friends, and even future generations. The Bible reminds us that the tongue holds the power of life and death. What kind of legacy are we leaving with our words?

I think of my daughter our daughter and the blessing I’ve prayed over her since she was in the womb. Those words are more than just a routine, they’re seeds planted in her heart, affirming her identity and purpose in Christ. One day, she’ll carry those words with her, and they’ll continue to bear fruit in her life.

Legacy-building starts with intentionality. Are we speaking life over the people around us? Are we using our words to uplift, encourage, and point others to Christ? Leaving a legacy of life-giving words requires consistency, but the impact is eternal.

Reflection Questions

  1. What legacy do you want your words to leave for your family and friends?
  2. How can you be more intentional about speaking life into others today?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the power of words. Help me to use my tongue to leave a legacy of life, love, and truth. Teach me to speak intentionally, uplifting those around me and pointing them to You. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The New Testament Church vs. Modern Churches

The New Testament church was marked by simplicity, unity, and devotion. Acts 2:42 paints a beautiful picture of believers who gathered daily to learn, pray, and share life together. In contrast, many modern churches often focus on programs, buildings, and entertainment.

This isn’t to say modern churches are wrong, but it’s a reminder to evaluate what truly matters. Are we prioritizing fellowship, teaching, and prayer, or are we distracted by outward appearances? The early church thrived because of its focus on Christ and community.

I’ve often reflected on what it would look like to return to this model. A church where relationships come first, where prayer is central, and where every believer is empowered to live out their faith. The New Testament church reminds us that true growth happens when we focus on the essentials and let God do the rest.

Reflection Questions

  1. How does your church reflect the simplicity and devotion of the New Testament church?
  2. What steps can you take to prioritize fellowship, prayer, and teaching in your life?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the example of the New Testament church. Teach me to focus on what truly matters and to build a life centered on fellowship, prayer, and Your Word. Help me to be a part of a community that reflects Your heart and advances Your kingdom. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

My Shoe Disaster and God’s Grace

Date: January 10, 2024

Bible Verse:

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.'” (2 Corinthians 12:9, NIV)

Message (Longer with a Fun Twist):

If you’ve ever tripped over your own shoes in public, you know how humbling that can be. One Sunday morning, I was rushing around the church foyer, greeting folks, handing out bulletins, and trying to fix a last-minute microphone issue, all while wearing a new pair of dress shoes that I hadn’t properly broken in.

Everything was going fine until I took a step and suddenly realized the shoelace from my left foot had snagged the buckle on my right shoe. In a glorious display, I tripped, flailed my arms, and slid a good three feet across the tile floor. I even knocked over a stack of chairs. Cue the dramatic clanging!

For a moment, the entire foyer went silent, jaws dropped. Then laughter erupted, from everyone, including me. People rushed over to help me up, making sure I was okay. I dusted myself off, red-faced, but couldn’t stop smiling.

That incident reminded me of God’s grace in our weaknesses. We all have moments where we stumble… sometimes literally. Yet, God meets us in those embarrassing situations with His love and mercy. I could’ve let that moment define the rest of my day, but instead, it became a chance to connect with people on a real level.

As believers, we sometimes think we have to appear flawless to be good witnesses for Christ. But in reality, our honest mishaps can reveal God’s grace even more. When we admit we’re not perfect, we point people to the One who is.

Now, I tie my shoelaces extra tight on Sunday mornings. And I keep an eye out for rogue chair stacks. But if I ever take another tumble, I know God’s grace will be right there, reminding me that He uses even our most awkward moments for His glory.

Bible Promise:

God’s grace covers our stumbles… both big and small.

“The Lord upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.” (Psalm 145:14, NIV)

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that Your grace is sufficient, especially in my weakest and most embarrassing moments. Help me to trust You and laugh at myself when life doesn’t go as planned. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that Your grace is sufficient, especially in my weakest and most embarrassing moments. Help me to trust You and laugh at myself when life doesn’t go as planned. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The Dead Sea Scrolls: Preserving the Word of God

The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947 was one of the most significant archaeological finds of the 20th century. These ancient manuscripts, hidden in caves near Qumran, include portions of nearly every book of the Old Testament, providing a remarkable confirmation of the Bible’s accuracy.

One of the most complete scrolls is the Isaiah Scroll, dated over 1,000 years earlier than the previously known manuscripts. The striking consistency between the scroll and later copies demonstrates the care with which God’s Word has been preserved through time.

The Dead Sea Scrolls remind us of the enduring nature of Scripture. They encourage us to trust that the Bible we read today is reliable and inspired by God. As we study His Word, we are reminded of its power to transform our lives and reveal His truth.

Reflection Questions

  1. How does the preservation of the Dead Sea Scrolls affirm your faith in the Bible’s reliability?
  2. What steps can you take to deepen your understanding and application of God’s Word?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for preserving Your Word throughout history and for the evidence of its reliability. Teach me to treasure Scripture and to live according to its truth. Help me to share its power and hope with others. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Trusting God in the Uncertainty of a Pandemic

I’ll never forget this birthday, the world feels so uncertain as the pandemic unfolds. Fear and anxiety seem to be everywhere, and yet, I’m reminded that God is our refuge. He is unchanging in a world that feels anything but stable.

This season has brought unexpected blessings, too. With the slower pace, I’ve had more time to pray, reflect, and spend quality time with my wife and daughter. We’ve leaned into our faith together, reminding ourselves that God is still in control, even when life feels chaotic.

As I reflect on this day, I’m reminded of Jason in the Bible, who stood firm in his faith despite opposition. Like him, we’re called to trust God in the midst of uncertainty. I pray that we all use this time to grow closer to Him and to shine His light in a world that desperately needs hope.

Reflection Questions

  1. How has God shown Himself to be your refuge during uncertain times?
  2. What steps can you take to trust Him more deeply in this season?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for being my refuge and strength. Teach me to trust You in uncertain times, knowing that You are always in control. Help me to use this season to grow in faith and to share Your hope with others. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Accepting God’s Forgiveness

For years, I struggled to truly accept God’s forgiveness. I would confess my sins, but the guilt lingered. I replayed my failures in my mind, convinced that I wasn’t worthy of His grace. It wasn’t until I immersed myself in the truth of Scripture that I began to understand the depth of God’s love and forgiveness.

1 John 1:9 reminds us that God’s forgiveness is complete. When we confess our sins, He doesn’t hold them against us; He purifies us completely. Yet, so often, we cling to shame and self-condemnation, as if punishing ourselves could somehow make us more deserving of His mercy. The truth is, we can never earn God’s forgiveness, it’s a gift freely given.

Accepting His forgiveness isn’t about forgetting our mistakes; it’s about trusting His grace and moving forward in freedom. When we let go of guilt, we make room for God’s healing and allow Him to use our brokenness for His glory.

Reflection Questions

  1. Are you holding onto guilt for something God has already forgiven?
  2. How can you embrace His forgiveness and walk in freedom?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of forgiveness through Jesus Christ. Help me to trust Your promises and let go of the guilt that weighs me down. Teach me to walk in the freedom and grace You’ve given me. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Church Isn’t About the Building

For many of us, the word “church” immediately brings to mind a building. But the Bible teaches us that the church isn’t about walls or steeples, it’s about people. Matthew 18:20 reminds us that wherever believers gather in Jesus’ name, He is there.

I’ve had seasons where I struggled with the traditional idea of church. But those moments taught me an important truth: the church isn’t confined to a specific place or time. It’s a living, breathing body of believers who come together to worship, serve, and grow in Christ.

Whether we meet in homes, parks, or traditional sanctuaries, the church is alive because of the people who carry the Spirit of God. When we embrace this perspective, we can experience the richness of community and the power of God’s presence, no matter where we are.

Reflection Questions

  1. How do you view the church? Is it more about the building or the people?
  2. How can you invest in your local church community, wherever it gathers?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of the church. Teach me to see it as more than a building and to invest in the people who make it Your body. Help me to gather with others in Your name and to experience Your presence wherever we meet. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.
