Returning to Ministry with Renewed Vision

When I stepped back into ministry after those months of rest and reflection, it felt different. I wasn’t the same person I was before. God had used that time to strip away my pride, heal my heart, and renew my vision for His work.

Coming back wasn’t about picking up where I left off. It was about stepping into something new. God had given me a deeper understanding of His grace and a greater compassion for others who are hurting. He reminded me that ministry isn’t about me; it’s about Him.

If you’re in a season of stepping back or waiting, know this: God isn’t finished with you. He’s preparing you for what’s next, shaping you into the person He’s calling you to be. When the time comes to move forward, you’ll do so with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper reliance on Him.

Reflection Questions

  1. How has God used seasons of waiting or rest to prepare you for new opportunities?
  2. What vision or purpose is He renewing in your heart today?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for restoring what was lost and for renewing my heart for ministry. Teach me to serve with humility, compassion, and reliance on Your strength. Help me to walk boldly into what You’ve prepared, trusting in Your faithfulness every step of the way. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Language in Movies: Does It Really Matter?

Language in movies is often dismissed as “just words,” but the Bible reminds us that words have power. When we expose ourselves to movies filled with foul language, we risk normalizing speech that dishonors God.

I’ve caught myself repeating phrases or thoughts from movies without even realizing it. The more I listened to profanity, the more it crept into my own language and mindset. Our hearts and minds absorb what we feed them, and what we consume can influence how we speak and act.

Choosing movies with uplifting or neutral language isn’t about being overly strict… it’s about protecting our hearts and reflecting Christ in all we do. What we allow into our lives matters because it shapes who we become.

Reflection Questions

  1. How does language in movies influence your thoughts or speech?
  2. What boundaries can you set to avoid corrupting talk in your entertainment choices?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for reminding me of the power of words. Teach me to honor You with what I listen to and watch. Help me to choose content that reflects Your goodness and truth, guarding my heart and speech. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The Transforming Power of Gratitude

Gratitude has the power to transform our perspective. When we choose to give thanks in all circumstances, as Paul encourages in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, we shift our focus from what’s wrong to what God is doing.

I remember a time when life felt overwhelming. Financial stress, personal challenges, and unanswered prayers clouded my mind. But one morning, as I began to pray, I felt led to list everything I was thankful for. What started as a reluctant exercise became a moment of worship. My circumstances hadn’t changed, but my heart had. Gratitude reminded me of God’s faithfulness and brought peace to my weary soul.

Gratitude isn’t about ignoring struggles; it’s about acknowledging God’s goodness in the midst of them. It transforms our hearts, strengthens our faith, and draws us closer to Him.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are three things you can thank God for today?
  2. How can practicing gratitude transform your outlook on current challenges?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness in every season of life. Teach me to cultivate a heart of gratitude, even in difficult circumstances. Help me to focus on Your goodness and to give thanks for the blessings You’ve provided. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

When Anger Fills Your Heart

I never thought I would feel angry with God, but I have. During one particularly painful season, I felt like He had let me down. I prayed for healing, for restoration, for answers, and none of it came the way I wanted. I found myself asking, “If You’re good, why would You allow this?”

Anger is a natural response to hurt, but Scripture reminds us to handle it carefully. God can handle our honesty, but He calls us to bring our anger to Him rather than letting it consume us.

In that season, I learned to lay my anger at His feet through prayer. I told Him how I felt, raw and unfiltered, and asked Him to meet me in my pain. Over time, He softened my heart, reminding me that His plans are always for my good, even when they don’t look the way I expect.

Reflection Questions

  1. Have you ever felt angry with God? How did you process those emotions?
  2. How can you bring your anger to God in a way that leads to healing?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for being patient with me in my anger and pain. Teach me to bring my frustrations to You and to trust in Your goodness. Help me to release bitterness and to find peace in Your presence. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Wishing I Were a Better Parent

Parenting is one of the greatest joys and hardest responsibilities God entrusts to us. As a dad, there have been moments when I’ve felt like I wasn’t enough, like I could have done more, said more, or been more present. Those feelings of inadequacy can be overwhelming.

One day, while praying about these feelings, God reminded me of Proverbs 22:6. My role isn’t to be perfect but to faithfully guide my children in His ways. He is the ultimate Father, and His grace fills the gaps where I fall short.

Wishing we were better parents is natural, but it’s important to remember that God is with us every step of the way. He equips us for the task and works in our children’s lives, even when we don’t see it. Trusting Him with their future allows us to focus on loving and leading them in the present.

Reflection Questions

  1. What areas of parenting do you need to surrender to God?
  2. How can you trust Him more fully with your children’s lives and futures?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the privilege of parenting. Teach me to rely on Your wisdom and grace as I guide my children. Help me to trust You with their lives and to show them Your love through my actions. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Supporting What You Listen To

Have you ever thought about the impact of your playlist? When we stream a song, buy an album, or attend a concert, we’re supporting the artist and their message… whether we agree with it or not.

This realization hit me hard when I discovered the values and lifestyles some of my favorite artists promoted. Even if their lyrics weren’t explicit, the bigger picture of what I was supporting didn’t align with my faith. I had to ask myself: “Does this glorify God? Am I honoring Him with what I listen to and support?”

It’s not about being legalistic, it’s about being intentional. Our choices matter. When we choose to support music that aligns with God’s truth, we not only guard our hearts but also encourage artists who are using their gifts for His glory.

Reflection Questions

  1. How does the music you support reflect your values and beliefs?
  2. What steps can you take to be more intentional about the artists you listen to?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the reminder that my choices matter. Teach me to honor You in what I listen to and support, and help me to reflect Your truth in every decision I make. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The Blessing of the Tongue

The tongue is small, but its power is immense. James reminds us that the same tongue can bless and curse, and as believers, we are called to use it for good. How often do we find ourselves praising God one moment and speaking harshly the next? It’s a struggle I’ve faced more times than I’d like to admit.

There was a season in my life when my words were sharp, reflecting my frustrations rather than my faith. I remember feeling convicted after a conversation where my tone didn’t reflect the love of Christ. James 3:10 echoed in my heart: “My brothers and sisters, this should not be.” That moment led me to prayer, asking God to transform my heart so my words would align with His character.

The tongue is a gift, and when we use it to bless, it becomes a powerful tool for God’s kingdom. Speaking life, encouragement, and truth can bring hope to others and reflect the love of Christ.

Reflection Questions

  1. How can you use your tongue to bring blessings instead of harm?
  2. Is there a relationship in your life that needs healing through words of encouragement?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of speech. Teach me to use my words to bless and build others up. Transform my heart so my tongue reflects Your love and truth. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The Power of Words

Have you ever been deeply hurt by someone’s words? Or have you experienced healing and encouragement from a kind word? The Bible repeatedly highlights the power of the tongue. Our words can wound or heal, destroy or restore.

There was a moment in my life when someone’s words left a scar on my heart. For years, I carried that hurt until someone else’s kind and thoughtful words brought healing. That experience reminded me of the weight our words carry.

Proverbs 12:18 contrasts reckless and wise speech. Reckless words cut deep, but wise words bring healing. As followers of Christ, we’re called to use our words to uplift, encourage, and bring life. Every word we speak is an opportunity to reflect God’s love and truth to others.

Reflection Questions

  1. Think about a time when your words either hurt or healed someone. How can you learn from that experience?
  2. How can you intentionally speak life into someone’s situation today?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the power of words. Help me to use my tongue to bring healing, encouragement, and truth to others. Teach me to reflect Your love in every conversation. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The Power of Prayer

I used to think prayer had to be eloquent to be effective. I’d hear others pray these beautifully worded prayers, and I’d think, “I could never pray like that.” For a long time, I struggled to find my voice in prayer. It felt awkward, even forced, as though I had to impress God with the right words.

Then, a life-changing moment shifted my perspective. A friend was in a dire situation, and I didn’t know what to say. All I could manage was, “God, help her. Please show up.” It wasn’t fancy or polished, but it was real. And God answered. He didn’t just show up in her situation; He showed up in my understanding of prayer. I realized it wasn’t about my words; it was about my heart.

Prayer isn’t about perfection; it’s about connection. It’s a conversation with the Creator of the universe who already knows your heart. James 5:16 tells us that the prayers of the righteous are powerful and effective. Not because of our ability but because of God’s faithfulness.

Look at the prayers in the Bible. Elijah prayed for rain, and God sent it. Hannah prayed for a son, and God gave her Samuel. Jesus prayed in the garden, surrendering His will to the Father. In every instance, prayer was the catalyst for God’s power to be displayed.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of prayer. Remind me that it’s not about the words I say but the heart I bring. Help me to trust You in every situation and to pray boldly, knowing that You hear me. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

When an Email Goes Wrong

Date: November 2, 2023

Bible Verse:

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs…” (Ephesians 4:29, NIV)

Message (Longer with a Fun Twist):

I was typing an email response to a church member who had, shall we say, a very strong opinion about the color of the new sanctuary carpet. I was tired, slightly annoyed, and typed a few lines that might have been more sarcastic than necessary.

In my mind, I thought, “I’ll just delete this afterward.” But before I could hit backspace, kiddo peeked over my shoulder. She let out a little gasp. “Dad, you’re not really going to send that, are you?”

Thank God for a child’s honesty. Sometimes we all need a dose of truth from an unexpected source. At that moment, I realized how easy it is for negative words to slip out. Especially when we’re not speaking them aloud but typing behind a screen.

I deleted the sarcastic lines, took a breath, and wrote a kinder, more patient response. The funny thing is, once I sent that gracious email, I felt so much better. The grumpiness I was holding onto vanished.

Communication is tricky, especially when we’re tired or dealing with tough people. But Ephesians 4:29 reminds us that our words, whether typed or spoken, are meant to build others up. Does that mean we let everyone walk all over us? Of course not. But even in correction or disagreement, we can choose words that reflect grace.

Later that week, the church member thanked me for hearing them out, and we eventually settled on a carpet color that (mostly) everyone liked. I can’t help but laugh now, thinking how close I came to sending that ill-timed sarcasm. Thank God for second chances. And for kids who aren’t afraid to speak up!

Bible Promise:

God can guide our words when we ask Him.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault…” (James 1:5, NIV)

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me how powerful words can be. Help me to pause before I speak or type, and choose words that build others up. May my communication honor You, even in conflict. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.
