Communication

In my marriage, one of the most significant challenges was communication. I wish I could say I always spoke with grace and patience, but there were times when frustration or pride got the better of me. I’ve replayed certain arguments in my mind, wondering how things might have turned out if I had chosen different words… or simply listened more.

After my divorce, God began to show me the power of words in a deeper way. I started noticing how my tone, even more than my words, impacted our daughter. If I came across as short or distracted, she would withdraw. But when I was intentional, looking her in the eyes and speaking with kindness, I could see her light up.

One night, after a particularly hectic day, I tucked our daughter into bed and asked her how she was feeling. “I’m okay, Daddy,” she said quietly, but I could tell she wasn’t. Instead of rushing to fix things, I simply said, “I’m here if you want to talk.” A few minutes passed, and then the floodgates opened. She shared how she felt caught between two homes and how hard it was to adjust.

That moment taught me an invaluable lesson: sometimes the most important part of communication is simply being present. Whether it’s with our children, our friends, or God, the act of truly listening can bring healing and connection.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for teaching me the value of communication. Help me to listen more and speak with grace and wisdom. May my words build others up and reflect Your love. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The Advocate

Jesus as “The Advocate” emphasizes His role as our defender and intercessor before the Father. When we fall short, He stands in our place, pleading on our behalf and covering us with His righteousness.

There have been times when I’ve felt unworthy to approach God because of my failures. In those moments, I’m reminded that Jesus is my Advocate. He doesn’t excuse my sin but lovingly steps in to remind me that His sacrifice has already paid the price.

A Defender of the Accused: Jesus protects us from the accusations of the enemy, declaring us forgiven and redeemed (Revelation 12:10).

An Intercessor for the Weak: As our Advocate, He intercedes for us, strengthening us in our weakness (Romans 8:34).

A Righteous Substitute: Jesus’ advocacy is based on His perfect righteousness, ensuring our acceptance before the Father.

Calling on the Advocate reminds us that we are never alone or without hope, no matter how far we fall.

The Resurrection and the Life

Jesus’ declaration as “The Resurrection and the Life” offers hope and assurance in the face of death and despair. This name reminds us of His power to bring life from what seems dead and to give us eternal life through faith in Him.

I’ve experienced moments when hope seemed out of reach, and life felt heavy with loss. Reflecting on this name of Jesus brought me comfort. He reminded me that no situation is beyond His power to redeem and restore, and no life is ever truly lost when it is in His hands.

Victory Over Death: Jesus’ resurrection assures us that death does not have the final say (1 Corinthians 15:55).

Life for the Present: The Resurrection and the Life bring renewal and restoration to our daily lives.

Hope for Eternity: Through faith in Jesus, we have the promise of eternal life with Him.

Our Son’s Birthday: Looking to the Future

Our boy turns 26 today, and as I reflect on his journey, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the man he’s become. From his accomplishments in the military to his academic achievements and beyond, he has shown what it means to live with dedication and perseverance.

This year marks a new chapter for him as he begins to navigate life after college. It’s a season of opportunity and growth, and I know God has incredible plans for his future. His gifts, combined with his faith and character, are a testimony to God’s hand on his life.

While I celebrate his achievements, I’m also praying for his continued strength and reliance on God. Life’s path isn’t always easy, but I trust that the Lord is ordering his steps and delighting in his journey. My prayer is that he continues to lean on God, embracing the future with confidence and faith.

The Cornerstone

Jesus as “The Cornerstone” signifies His role as the foundation of our faith and the church. In ancient construction, the cornerstone was the first stone laid, aligning and supporting the entire structure.

I’ve had moments where I felt like life’s foundation was crumbling beneath me. During those times, Jesus reminded me that He is my Cornerstone, the unshakable foundation on which I can build my life.

The Foundation of Our Faith: Jesus is the cornerstone of salvation, the basis of our relationship with God (Ephesians 2:20).

The Alignment of Our Lives: As the cornerstone, He aligns our priorities and purpose, guiding us to live in step with His will.

The Strength of Our Hope: When life feels uncertain, the Cornerstone offers stability and security, reminding us that we are firmly grounded in Him.

Calling on the Cornerstone challenges us to build our lives on Jesus, trusting in His strength and direction.

  2. In what areas do you need to realign your life with the Cornerstone?

Joseph: Trusting God in the Pit

Joseph’s story has always been a reminder to me that God is faithful, even in the darkest moments. Sold into slavery by his brothers, falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife, and forgotten in prison, Joseph endured years of pain and rejection. Yet through it all, he trusted God’s plan.

When my marriage ended, I felt like I was in my own version of the pit. The dreams I had for my family, ministry, and future seemed shattered. I couldn’t see how any good could come from the pain. But like Joseph, I’ve learned that God is always working, even when we can’t see it.

Joseph didn’t let his circumstances define him. He remained faithful, using his gifts wherever he was… even in prison. Eventually, God raised him up, and Joseph became second-in-command in Egypt. The very brothers who betrayed him ended up bowing before him, fulfilling the dreams Joseph had years before.

Looking back on my own journey, I can see how God has been faithful. He’s used the pain to refine me, deepen my faith, and open doors I never would have imagined. Like Joseph, I’ve learned to trust that what the enemy meant for harm, God can use for good.

If you’re in a pit right now, hold on to this truth: God isn’t finished with your story. Trust Him, stay faithful, and watch how He brings beauty out of the ashes.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me through Joseph’s story that You are always working, even in the darkest moments. Help me to trust Your plan and remain faithful, knowing that You can turn any situation for good. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The Alpha and the Omega

The title “Alpha and Omega” highlights Jesus’ eternal nature and sovereignty over all creation. As the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, this name reminds us that He is the beginning and the end of everything.

This name has been a source of strength for me in times of uncertainty. When life feels like it’s spiraling out of control, remembering that Jesus holds the beginning and the end reassures me that He also holds every moment in between.

The Beginning of All Things: Jesus was present at creation, and through Him, all things were made (John 1:1-3).

The End of All Things: He is the culmination of God’s plan, ensuring that His purposes will be fulfilled.

The Lord of Every Moment: As Alpha and Omega, Jesus reminds us that He is with us through every season, holding our past, present, and future.

Calling on the Alpha and Omega encourages us to trust in His eternal power and to rest in His perfect plan for our lives.

Reflection Questions

The Way, The Truth, and The Life

When Jesus declared Himself as “The Way, The Truth, and The Life,” He proclaimed His unique role as the only path to God. This title encapsulates His purpose and mission, offering direction, clarity, and eternal hope.

I remember struggling with doubt, wondering if I was on the right path. In that season, Jesus’ words reminded me that He is not just a guide but the Way itself. Trusting Him brought peace and assurance, knowing that following Him leads to life and truth.

The Way to the Father: Jesus provides the only path to a relationship with God, offering salvation through His sacrifice.

The Truth That Sets Us Free: His teachings reveal God’s truth, guiding us to live in alignment with His will (John 8:32).

The Life That Never Ends: Jesus gives abundant life now and the promise of eternal life with Him.

The True Vine

Jesus’ declaration as “The True Vine” emphasizes our dependence on Him for spiritual growth and fruitfulness. Like branches connected to a vine, we can only thrive when we remain firmly rooted in Him.

I’ve experienced seasons where I tried to accomplish things in my own strength, only to feel frustrated and fruitless. It was during those times that this name of Jesus reminded me to reconnect with Him. As I abided in His Word and presence, I saw my life bear fruit. Not because of my efforts, but because of His life flowing through me.

Connection Brings Life: Just as a branch draws life from the vine, we must stay connected to Jesus to thrive spiritually.

Abiding Produces Fruit: Remaining in Christ enables us to bear the fruit of the Spirit, reflecting His character in our lives (Galatians 5:22-23).

Apart from Him, We Can Do Nothing: Jesus reminds us that without Him, our efforts are meaningless, but in Him, we find purpose and power.

Living the Sermon on the Mount

The Sermon on the Mount isn’t just a collection of teachings. It’s a call to live a life fully surrendered to God. Jesus’ words challenge us to embrace humility, pursue righteousness, love sacrificially, and trust God completely. They invite us to reflect His kingdom here on earth.

Looking back on this series, I see how each teaching builds on the others, painting a picture of what it means to be a follower of Christ. From the Beatitudes to the parable of the wise builder, Jesus gives us a roadmap for a life that honors God and impacts the world.

Living the Sermon on the Mount isn’t about perfection… it’s about daily dependence on Jesus. When we commit to following His teachings, we become salt and light, drawing others to Him and experiencing the fullness of His kingdom. Let’s live out these truths boldly, trusting in His grace to guide us.

Final Blog of the Sermon on the Mount Series: Building a Kingdom Life

Date: May 10, 2027

Bible Verse: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)

Message:

The Sermon on the Mount is more than a collection of teachings. It’s the heart of Jesus’ message, a blueprint for how to live a life that reflects God’s kingdom. From the Beatitudes to the call to build on the rock, every word challenges us to align our hearts, actions, and priorities with God’s will.

As I’ve reflected on this series, I’ve been reminded of how countercultural these teachings are. Jesus calls us to be humble when the world values pride, to forgive when it’s easier to hold a grudge, and to trust Him completely when we’re tempted to rely on our own understanding. These aren’t easy commands, but they’re life-changing.

I’ve personally experienced moments where applying the Sermon on the Mount felt overwhelming. When I struggled to forgive, to choose meekness over pride, or to trust God’s provision, I saw just how far I fell short. But Jesus’ words are always paired with His grace. He doesn’t just call us to this way of life, He empowers us to live it through His Spirit.

Living out the Sermon on the Mount is a daily journey. It’s about choosing to be salt and light in a world that desperately needs hope. It’s about building our lives on the solid foundation of His Word, knowing that storms will come but His truth will sustain us. And ultimately, it’s about seeking His kingdom first, trusting that He will provide everything we need.

Reflection Questions:

How has this journey through the Sermon on the Mount deepened your understanding of Jesus’ teachings?

What steps can you take to live out these truths in your daily life?

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for the profound truths of the Sermon on the Mount. Teach me to live a life that reflects Your kingdom, trusting in Your strength and grace each day. Help me to be salt and light, building my life on the solid foundation of Your Word. Transform my heart to seek Your will above all else. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.
