Dating vs. Dating for Marriage

Dating in today’s world often feels like a game. An endless cycle of meeting people with no clear direction. But as Christians, dating isn’t just about companionship; it’s about intentionally seeking a partner who aligns with God’s plan for marriage.

Whenever I feel healed and ready to date after my divorce, I have to evaluate my approach. A lot has changed in 20 years. But God’s word hasn’t. Am I dating just to fill a void, or am I seeking someone who shares my faith and values? Psalm 127:1 reminds me that if the Lord isn’t at the center of my relationships, my efforts are in vain.

Dating for marriage means being intentional. It’s about seeking God’s guidance, communicating openly about values and goals, and prioritizing spiritual connection. While the process may look different for everyone, the goal remains the same: to honor God in the pursuit of a lifelong partnership.

The Lamb of God

Jesus as the “Lamb of God” represents His role as the perfect and final sacrifice for our sins. This title takes us back to the Passover lamb in Exodus, which symbolized deliverance and redemption, and points to Jesus’ ultimate act of love on the cross.

When I reflect on Jesus as the Lamb of God, I’m reminded of the incredible price He paid for my redemption. It’s a humbling and awe-inspiring thought that He willingly gave Himself so that I could be free from sin and reconciled to God.

The Perfect Sacrifice: Unlike the temporary sacrifices of the Old Testament, Jesus’ sacrifice was once and for all, fully satisfying the penalty of sin (Hebrews 10:10).

The Redeemer of the World: As the Lamb of God, Jesus offers salvation to all who believe in Him, regardless of their past.

The Fulfillment of Prophecy: Jesus’ role as the Lamb fulfills God’s promise of a Savior, proving His faithfulness and love.

Calling on the Lamb of God reminds us to live in gratitude for His sacrifice and to share the message of redemption with others.

The Great Camping Trip Blunder

Scripture:

“The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9, ESV)

Every now and then, I get a wild idea to do something adventurous with kiddo. Last spring, that adventure was camping. I pictured us sitting by the fire, roasting marshmallows, and gazing at the stars while bonding over deep, meaningful conversations. What actually happened was… a little different.

We arrived at the campsite late because I forgot to account for traffic. It was already dark, so I set up the tent by flashlight, only to realize I’d forgotten the stakes. The tent collapsed twice before I managed to rig it with sticks and duct tape.

Then came the food. I had this grand plan to grill burgers over the fire, but I couldn’t get the fire to stay lit. We ended up eating cold sandwiches, with kiddo laughing hysterically every time I tried to spark the flames. “This is going on my highlight reel,” she joked.

Finally, we settled into the tent. Only to be woken up at 2 a.m. by a curious raccoon digging through our cooler. kiddo dubbed him “Bandit” and decided he was the real MVP of the trip.

At first, I felt like the whole thing was a disaster. But as we drove home the next day, kiddo turned to me and said, “That was the best trip ever, Dad.” Her words reminded me that life rarely goes as planned, but the memories we make in the messes often mean the most.

Camping taught me that God’s plans are often better than our own, even when they look different than we imagined. We might plan for perfection, but it’s in the unexpected moments that His grace, humor, and love shine brightest.

The title “The Bread of Life” reminds us that Jesus is the ultimate source of spiritual nourishment and satisfaction. Just as bread sustains physical life, Jesus sustains and fills our souls.

During a season when I felt spiritually empty, I turned to Jesus as the Bread of Life. Instead of looking to temporary fixes to satisfy my heart, I leaned into His Word, His presence, and His promises. Only then did I realize that He alone could truly fill me.

Jesus Satisfies Our Hunger: The Bread of Life fills the deep longing in our hearts that nothing else can satisfy.

Jesus Sustains Our Souls: Just as bread nourishes our bodies, Jesus strengthens and sustains us spiritually.

Jesus Offers Eternal Life: The Bread of Life gives us not just daily provision but the promise of eternal fulfillment.

When What You Want Doesn’t Happen

I prayed for reconciliation. I prayed for healing. I believed that God could restore my marriage, and I held onto that hope with everything I had. But it didn’t happen. Instead, we ended up divorced. A reality I never thought I’d face.

For a long time, I wrestled with the question: Why, God? I couldn’t understand why He allowed this to happen when I was praying for the exact opposite. It felt like He wasn’t listening or didn’t care.

But as I’ve walked through this journey, God has reminded me that His ways are higher than mine. He sees the bigger picture, even when I can’t. While the outcome wasn’t what I wanted, He has been faithful in teaching me to trust Him with the pieces of my broken dreams.

Watching my children navigate this season has been painful, especially when I’ve seen them experience moments of disappointment and heartache. But it’s also reminded me of the importance of showing them what it means to trust God, even when life doesn’t go the way we planned.

The Dangers of Secular Music

I’ve seen it happen more than once. Someone who loves Christian music and fills their life with praise and worship slowly starts letting their old music creep back in. It’s subtle at first, just a song here and there for nostalgia’s sake. But over time, that music becomes the norm. Their attitude begins to shift, their clothing choices change, and eventually, their heart is no longer fully aligned with God.

I get it. I love 90s and 2000s music. Back then, I knew every rap lyric, pop hit, and yes, even some country songs (though I listened to those in secret growing up in Oklahoma and Arkansas!). Music has a way of taking us back to moments in life, stirring up memories and emotions. But here’s what I’ve learned: those feelings can shape the choices we make.

During my separation and divorce, I realized how much music affected me. A breakup song could keep me stuck in anger and hurt, while a live performance of an old favorite could bring me down emotionally. I had to make a choice: stay in the emotional rollercoaster or fill my heart and mind with truth.

That’s when I fully embraced Christian music again. I began searching for artists who sounded like the secular ones I loved, but with a message that lifted my spirit instead of pulling me down. The difference was undeniable. Songs that glorify God hit differently, they don’t just entertain; they encourage, heal, and remind you of your identity in Christ.

Christian music has become a lifeline for me. It helps me fight the lies of the enemy and stay focused on God’s promises. There’s nothing wrong with liking a particular sound or style, but we have to be intentional about the messages we’re letting into our lives. Music is powerful, it can draw us closer to God or pull us away.

So, if you’re struggling to let go of old songs, I challenge you to explore the incredible Christian artists out there. There’s something for every taste, and I promise you’ll find music that not only sounds good but also nourishes your soul.

Moses: When God Calls the Inadequate

Moses is one of the most remarkable leaders in the Bible, but when God first called him, he didn’t feel up to the task. He had a past he wasn’t proud of, he doubted his abilities, and he didn’t think he was the right person for the job.

I’ve felt that way too. After my divorce, I questioned whether I could still serve in ministry. I wondered if God could use someone who had failed so publicly. Every time I thought about stepping back into leadership, a little voice whispered, “Who do you think you are?”

Moses asked the same question: “Who am I?” But God’s response changed everything: “I will be with you.” (Exodus 3:12) God wasn’t focused on Moses’ qualifications. He was focused on His own power and presence.

That truth gave me the courage to step forward again. God doesn’t call the qualified; He qualifies the called. Like Moses, we might feel inadequate, but our confidence doesn’t come from who we are, it comes from who God is.

If you’re feeling unworthy of God’s calling, remember this: He’s not asking you to do it alone. He’s with you, equipping you for the task He’s set before you.

Light of the World

When Jesus declared Himself the “Light of the World,” He offered hope to a world trapped in darkness. His light illuminates our path, dispels fear, and brings life where there was once death.

I’ll never forget a time when I felt like I was walking in a fog of confusion and doubt. It was during those days that I turned to Jesus, asking Him to guide me. His light didn’t just illuminate my path. It brought clarity, peace, and renewed purpose.

The Light That Guides: Jesus shines a light on our path, helping us navigate life with wisdom and truth (Psalm 119:105).

The Light That Dispels Darkness: His presence drives out fear, sin, and despair, replacing them with hope and joy.

The Light That Gives Life: The Light of the World offers eternal life to all who follow Him, calling us out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9).

Calling on the Light of the World reminds us that no matter how dark life may seem, Jesus is our constant source of hope and guidance.

Overcoming Fear

Fear has a way of creeping in when you least expect it. After my divorce, I found myself battling fears I’d never faced before. Fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of what the future might hold. Even as a pastor, I wasn’t immune to the “what ifs” that seemed to follow me everywhere.

One particular night, I was lying awake, my mind racing with worry about our daughter. What kind of example was I setting for her? Was I doing enough as her dad? I felt overwhelmed, and the weight of fear threatened to crush me.

That’s when God reminded me of 2 Timothy 1:7. Fear isn’t from Him. He gives us power, love, and a sound mind, not anxiety and doubt. I began to pray, asking God to replace my fear with His peace. Slowly, I felt the tension ease.

Fear will come knocking at your door, but you don’t have to let it in. God has given us the tools to fight back, His Word, prayer, and His promises. When fear rises, remind yourself of who God is. He is your protector, your provider, and your peace.

If you’re facing fear today, know this: it doesn’t define you. God’s power is greater than any fear you’ll ever face.

The Good Shepherd

The title “The Good Shepherd” reveals Jesus as the one who cares for, protects, and sacrifices for His people. As a shepherd knows each sheep by name, Jesus knows us personally and leads us with compassion and love.

There have been moments in my life when I felt lost, unsure of the path forward. In those times, I clung to the image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. He reminded me that I didn’t have to navigate life alone, He was there to guide me, protect me, and bring me back when I strayed.

The Shepherd’s Care: Jesus tenderly cares for His flock, providing for their needs and tending to their wounds (Psalm 23).

The Shepherd’s Protection: As the Good Shepherd, He stands between us and danger, laying down His life to save us from harm.

The Shepherd’s Sacrifice: Jesus’ ultimate act of love was giving His life for His sheep, demonstrating the depth of His commitment to us.

Calling on the Good Shepherd reminds us that we are deeply known, loved, and cared for by Jesus, who leads us faithfully.
