The Gift of Speaking in Tongues

The gift of tongues is a Spirit-empowered ability to speak in a language unknown to the speaker, often for prayer, worship, or a message to the church. This gift demonstrates God’s presence and serves as a sign to both believers and unbelievers.

As part of the Assemblies of God, I’ve seen how the gift of tongues brings edification and intimacy in prayer. Whether in a private prayer time or a corporate worship setting, this gift is a powerful reminder of the Holy Spirit’s active presence in our lives.

For Personal Edification: Speaking in tongues during prayer allows believers to connect deeply with God, bypassing human understanding (1 Corinthians 14:2-4).

For Corporate Edification: When accompanied by interpretation, tongues can bring a message of encouragement to the church (1 Corinthians 14:27).

A Sign to Unbelievers: This gift serves as a testimony to God’s power and draws attention to His work (Acts 2:6-8).

Calling on the Holy Spirit for the gift of tongues reminds us to embrace His work in our lives and to worship Him with our whole being.

Reflection Questions

  1. How has the gift of tongues deepened your relationship with God?
  2. How can you seek to use this gift in alignment with God’s purpose and order?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of tongues that draws me closer to You in prayer and worship. Teach me to use this gift for Your glory and to edify others. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The Gift of Miraculous Powers

The gift of miraculous powers is the Spirit-enabled ability to perform extraordinary acts that defy natural explanation. This gift demonstrates God’s sovereignty and His ability to intervene in impossible situations.

I recall a story shared by a fellow pastor about a community facing a severe drought. They prayed together, and rain fell the very next day. Events like this show that God’s power is not limited by human understanding or circumstances.

God’s Sovereignty on Display: Miracles remind us that nothing is impossible for God and that He is in control of all things (Matthew 19:26).

A Sign to Unbelievers: Miraculous powers often serve as a testimony to those who do not yet believe, drawing them to faith (Acts 14:3).

A Strengthening of Faith: Witnessing or experiencing miracles inspires awe and deepens trust in God’s power and goodness.

Calling on the Holy Spirit for miraculous powers reminds us of His active presence and His desire to work through us for His glory.

Reflection Questions

  1. When have you seen or heard of a miracle that strengthened your faith?
  2. How can you pray for God’s miraculous intervention in your life or community?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of miraculous powers that reveals Your sovereignty and greatness. Teach me to trust in Your ability to do the impossible and to give You glory in all things. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit empowers believers with spiritual gifts to build up the church and advance God’s kingdom. These gifts are diverse, given by the Spirit to equip us for service and to reflect God’s glory.

As an Assemblies of God minister, I’ve seen the beauty and power of spiritual gifts at work in the church. Whether it’s a word of wisdom, a prophecy, or the gift of healing, each gift serves a unique purpose in glorifying God and edifying His people.

A Diversity of Gifts: The Spirit gives gifts such as wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, prophecy, and tongues, each playing a vital role in the church (1 Corinthians 12:7-11).

Unity in Diversity: Though the gifts are varied, they come from the same Spirit, working together to build up the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-14).

For God’s Glory: The gifts are not for personal gain but for the benefit of others and the glorification of God (1 Peter 4:10-11).

Calling on the Holy Spirit to reveal and activate His gifts in our lives allows us to serve others with boldness and humility.

Reflection Questions

  1. What spiritual gifts has the Holy Spirit given you?
  2. How can you use your gifts to serve others and glorify God?

The Holy Spirit at Pentecost

The day of Pentecost marks a pivotal moment in the New Testament… the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the early church. This event fulfilled Jesus’ promise that the Spirit would come to empower His followers for ministry and witness.

I’ve often thought about how those disciples must have felt as they waited in that upper room. They were faithful, but they didn’t fully understand what was coming. Then, suddenly, the Holy Spirit arrived in power, transforming them from hesitant followers to bold witnesses for Christ.

The Promise Fulfilled: Jesus promised that the Spirit would come to empower His disciples, and Pentecost was the fulfillment of that promise (John 14:16-17; Acts 1:8).

Empowered Witnesses: The Spirit enabled the disciples to preach the gospel boldly, beginning in Jerusalem and spreading to the ends of the earth (Acts 2:14-41).

The Birth of the Church: Pentecost marked the beginning of the New Testament church, unified and equipped by the Spirit for God’s mission.

The same Spirit who came at Pentecost is still at work today, empowering us to live boldly for Christ and share His gospel with the world.

The Bright Morning Star

Jesus as “The Bright Morning Star” symbolizes hope, guidance, and the promise of a new beginning. Just as the morning star signals the dawn, Jesus points us toward His light and the hope of eternal life.

A Light in the Darkness: The Bright Morning Star shines into our darkest moments, offering guidance and reassurance.

A Promise of New Beginnings: This name reminds us that with Jesus, every day is an opportunity for renewal.

The Cornerstone

Jesus as “The Cornerstone” signifies His role as the foundation of our faith and the church. In ancient construction, the cornerstone was the first stone laid, aligning and supporting the entire structure.

I’ve had moments where I felt like life’s foundation was crumbling beneath me. During those times, Jesus reminded me that He is my Cornerstone, the unshakable foundation on which I can build my life.

The Foundation of Our Faith: Jesus is the cornerstone of salvation, the basis of our relationship with God (Ephesians 2:20).

The Alignment of Our Lives: As the cornerstone, He aligns our priorities and purpose, guiding us to live in step with His will.

The Strength of Our Hope: When life feels uncertain, the Cornerstone offers stability and security, reminding us that we are firmly grounded in Him.

Calling on the Cornerstone challenges us to build our lives on Jesus, trusting in His strength and direction.

Church Isn’t About the Building

Scripture: “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20, NIV)

Growing up, Sunday mornings meant dressing up, sitting on a pew, and listening to the pastor, my bonus dad, bring the Word while my mom led worship. I loved the tradition. I respected the rhythm. But honestly… I didn’t fully understand what church really, truly meant.

Even after Bible school, years of serving, and being on staff in ministry, it wasn’t until my world fell apart… when I found myself walking through divorce, single parenting, and questioning my calling, that I finally began to understand.

Church isn’t about a building.

I remember sitting on the living room floor with my daughter one evening. There was no stage, no microphone, no worship team. Just the two of us, praying together, reading Scripture, and singing. In that moment, I felt the presence of God as clearly as if I had been in the grandest sanctuary. He was there.

That’s what church is.

The New Testament church wasn’t centered on pews or programs. It was people. People breaking bread together, praying together, worshiping together. It was life shared in simplicity, with Jesus at the center.

But let me be clear. This doesn’t mean church gatherings are optional. Scripture calls us to not neglect meeting together. There is power in corporate worship, shared teaching, accountability, and the spiritual covering of biblical leadership. Church isn’t about where you gather, but that you gather. Whether it’s in a building, a home, a park, or a borrowed space, we are called to be the Body of Christ together, not just individually.

That’s what I strive to model now. Whether I’m in a church building, standing on the sideline during daughter’s volleyball game, or talking to a neighbor on the driveway, I want to carry the presence of Christ with me. Church doesn’t start at 10 a.m. It starts in the heart of those who gather in His name.

Bible Promise:
God’s presence is not confined to walls. He meets us wherever we are.
The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.
Psalm 145:18 (NLT)

Reflection Questions:

  1. Where have you experienced God’s presence outside of a traditional church building?
  2. How can you model “being the church” in your everyday life this week?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding me that Your presence isn’t limited to a building. Help me carry the heart of the church wherever I go, into my home, my workplace, my conversations, and every part of my daily life. And at the same time, give me a deep love for the Body of Christ. Let me never take for granted the beauty of gathering with other believers. Make me more aware of Your nearness, and help me reflect Your love and truth with every step I take.
I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise.
It’s in Jesus’ name I pray.
Amen & Amen.

Why Tithing Matters to God

Tithing is one of the most misunderstood and debated practices in the church, yet it remains a powerful way to honor God and acknowledge His provision in our lives. In Malachi 3:10, God not only commands tithing but invites us to test Him in this area, promising blessings in return.

Tithing is not about the money, it’s about the heart. When we give the first 10% of our income to God, we declare that He is our provider and that we trust Him to meet our needs. It’s an act of worship, reminding us that everything we have comes from Him.

I’ve experienced seasons of financial uncertainty where tithing felt like a sacrifice, but every time I’ve trusted God in this area, He’s shown His faithfulness. Tithing isn’t just about obedience. It’s about experiencing God’s provision, faithfulness, and blessing in ways we couldn’t imagine.

Reflection Questions

  1. How does tithing reflect your trust in God as your provider?
  2. What steps can you take to honor God through giving, even in challenging seasons?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your provision and faithfulness. Teach me to trust You with my finances and to honor You through tithing. Help me to give with a joyful heart, knowing that everything I have belongs to You. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Marriage: The Role of Sacrificial Love

Marriage is one of the most profound illustrations of Christ’s relationship with the church. Ephesians 5:25 challenges husbands to love their wives with the same sacrificial love that Jesus demonstrated. This love isn’t based on feelings or convenience. It’s a daily choice to put your spouse’s needs above your own.

Sacrificial love means serving, forgiving, and persevering, even when it’s hard. It reflects Christ’s love, which is selfless and unconditional. For wives, this means honoring and respecting their husbands, as Ephesians 5:33 instructs. Together, this creates a beautiful partnership that glorifies God.

In my own journey, I’ve learned that this kind of love requires humility and grace. It’s not about being perfect, but about striving to reflect Christ in our actions and attitudes. When we love sacrificially, we strengthen our marriages and create a foundation that can withstand life’s challenges.

Reflection Questions

  1. How can you practice sacrificial love in your marriage or relationships?
  2. What does it look like to reflect Christ’s love in your daily interactions with your spouse?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your example of sacrificial love. Teach me to love selflessly and to reflect Your grace in my marriage. Help me to serve, honor, and cherish my spouse, trusting You to strengthen our bond. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The Role of the Church in Evangelism

While evangelism is a personal responsibility, the church plays a vital role in equipping and supporting believers to share the gospel. Together, we are called to be a light to the world and a community that points others to Christ.

Equipping Believers: The church provides training, resources, and encouragement for evangelism. From sermons to small groups, it’s a place to grow in your ability to share the gospel.

Creating Opportunities: Church events, outreach programs, and mission trips provide platforms for believers to engage with their community and share Christ’s love.

Praying Together: Corporate prayer for the lost is a powerful way to align with God’s mission and seek His guidance in reaching others.

The church is a family on mission together, united in the purpose of making disciples of all nations.

Reflection Questions

  1. How can your church equip and encourage you to share the gospel?
  2. What role can you play in helping your church reach its community for Christ?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of the church and for the ways it equips us to share the gospel. Teach me to work alongside my church family to reflect Your love and truth. Help Kneel Ministries encourage believers to see the church as a vital part of evangelism. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.
