When You Just Like the Beat

I used to tell myself, “I’m just here for the beat. The lyrics don’t really matter.” It was an easy justification. If the rhythm was catchy and the melody was memorable, I convinced myself that what I was listening to didn’t affect me.

But over time, I realized something: even when I wasn’t consciously paying attention to the lyrics, they were still influencing me. The words were planting seeds in my heart, seeds of negativity, lust, or anger, that grew without me realizing it.

Music is powerful. It bypasses our defenses and goes straight to the heart. That’s why God calls us to guard our hearts. If the beat is great but the message is harmful, it can still impact our thoughts and actions. Choosing music that aligns with God’s truth isn’t about being overly cautious; it’s about protecting what matters most, our relationship with Him.

Reflection Questions

  1. Have you ever found yourself dismissing harmful lyrics because you liked the beat?
  2. How can you intentionally choose music that uplifts and aligns with God’s truth?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of music and its ability to move our hearts. Teach me to be mindful of what I listen to and to choose songs that honor You. Help me to guard my heart and to reflect Your truth in every area of my life. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Pontius Pilate: A Historical Figure Confirmed

Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor who presided over Jesus’ trial, plays a significant role in the New Testament. For years, some skeptics questioned whether Pilate was a historical figure or merely a character in the biblical narrative. However, the discovery of the “Pilate Stone” in 1961 silenced much of that skepticism.

This limestone block, found in Caesarea Maritima, bears an inscription mentioning Pontius Pilate and his title as the prefect of Judea. This archaeological evidence confirms his existence and aligns with the Bible’s account. Additionally, other Roman documents reference Pilate’s governorship, further solidifying his role in history.

The confirmation of Pilate’s existence reminds us that the Bible is not only a spiritual text but also a historical record. It strengthens our confidence in its reliability and invites us to reflect on the profound events surrounding Jesus’ trial and crucifixion.

Reflection Questions

  1. How does the confirmation of biblical figures like Pilate strengthen your faith in Scripture?
  2. What lessons can you take from the events surrounding Pilate’s role in Jesus’ trial?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the evidence that confirms the truth of Your Word. Teach me to trust in its reliability and to reflect on the significance of Jesus’ trial and sacrifice. Help me to share the gospel with confidence and love. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

TV Shows and the Normalization of Sin

TV shows today often portray sin as normal, acceptable, or even glamorous. Whether it’s promiscuity, dishonesty, or other moral compromises, these behaviors are frequently woven into storylines in ways that make them seem harmless or justified.

The more we expose ourselves to these messages, the more we risk becoming desensitized. What once shocked us can start to feel normal, and what once convicted us can become easier to ignore. As Christians, we must guard against this gradual erosion of our values.

Choosing TV shows that align with biblical principles doesn’t mean avoiding all secular content. It means being discerning. Ask yourself: Does this show challenge my faith, or does it encourage me to grow closer to God? When we prioritize His truth, we protect our hearts and minds from the subtle normalization of sin.

Reflection Questions

  1. How do the TV shows you watch influence your thoughts, values, or actions?
  2. What steps can you take to be more intentional about your viewing habits?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the wisdom of Your Word that helps me discern what is good and true. Teach me to recognize and avoid content that normalizes sin, and help me to focus on what draws me closer to You. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Supporting What You Listen To

Have you ever thought about the impact of your playlist? When we stream a song, buy an album, or attend a concert, we’re supporting the artist and their message… whether we agree with it or not.

This realization hit me hard when I discovered the values and lifestyles some of my favorite artists promoted. Even if their lyrics weren’t explicit, the bigger picture of what I was supporting didn’t align with my faith. I had to ask myself: “Does this glorify God? Am I honoring Him with what I listen to and support?”

It’s not about being legalistic, it’s about being intentional. Our choices matter. When we choose to support music that aligns with God’s truth, we not only guard our hearts but also encourage artists who are using their gifts for His glory.

Reflection Questions

  1. How does the music you support reflect your values and beliefs?
  2. What steps can you take to be more intentional about the artists you listen to?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the reminder that my choices matter. Teach me to honor You in what I listen to and support, and help me to reflect Your truth in every decision I make. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Binge-Watching and the Stewardship of Time

We’ve all done it… sat down to watch “just one episode,” only to find ourselves hours deep into a show with barely any memory of how we got there. Binge-watching has become a cultural norm, but as Christians, we’re called to steward our time wisely.

The danger of binge-watching isn’t just about wasted hours… it’s about what we’re prioritizing. Are we giving our time to something that draws us closer to God, or are we numbing ourselves with endless entertainment? It’s easy to let “just one more episode” replace prayer, Bible study, or quality time with loved ones.

This doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a good show, but it does mean we need to set boundaries. Make intentional choices about what you watch and how much time you spend on it. Remember, every moment is a gift from God. Let’s use it wisely.

Reflection Questions

  1. How has binge-watching affected your priorities or relationship with God?
  2. What steps can you take to steward your time more wisely?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of time and the opportunities You give each day. Teach me to use my time wisely, focusing on what honors You. Help me to set healthy boundaries with entertainment and to prioritize my relationship with You. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Rated R Movies and the Christian Walk

Rated R movies are often marketed as “realistic” or “gritty,” but many contain graphic violence, strong language, or explicit content that conflicts with biblical values. As Christians, we’re called to set our minds on things that are pure and praiseworthy.

Watching rated R content can desensitize us to sin. What starts as a one-time indulgence can become normalized, dulling our sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s convictions.

Does this mean all rated R movies are off-limits? Not necessarily. Some films, like those based on historical events (The Passion of the Christ), carry a meaningful message despite their rating. However, it’s crucial to ask ourselves whether a movie glorifies sin or points us to God’s truth.

Reflection Questions

  1. How do you discern whether a movie aligns with your faith?
  2. What steps can you take to evaluate the content you watch?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the wisdom You give through Your Word. Teach me to be discerning about the movies I watch and to focus on what is pure, noble, and excellent. Help me to honor You in my entertainment choices. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Overcoming Challenges

Life is full of challenges, and some days it feels like the weight of the world is on our shoulders. But as believers, we don’t have to face our struggles alone. God promises to be our strength, our refuge, and our ever-present help in trouble.

There was a season in my life when I felt completely overwhelmed. Every obstacle seemed insurmountable, and I didn’t know how I was going to make it through. In my desperation, I cried out to God and was reminded of Philippians 4:13. That verse became my anthem: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Overcoming challenges doesn’t mean the problems disappear overnight. It means trusting that God is with you, equipping you with everything you need to endure and grow. His strength is made perfect in our weakness, and His grace is always sufficient.

Reflection Questions

  1. What challenges are you currently facing? How can you rely on God’s strength to overcome them?
  2. How has God helped you overcome difficulties in the past?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for being my strength in every season of life. Help me to face challenges with courage, knowing that You are with me. Teach me to trust Your plans and lean on Your grace when I feel weak. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.
