I’ve experienced moments in ministry when something appeared good on the surface, but the Holy Spirit gave me a check in my spirit. As I prayed, He revealed what was truly at work, protecting me and others from harm. Discernment is essential in navigating spiritual battles and ensuring we walk in truth.

Discerning God’s Work: This gift helps us recognize and align with what God is doing in a situation (Acts 16:6-10).

Exposing Deception: Discernment protects us from false teachings and spiritual attacks, keeping us grounded in truth (1 John 4:1).

Strengthening the Church: The gift of discernment equips believers to make wise decisions, fostering unity and spiritual growth.

A Catalyst for Miracles: This gift often precedes and accompanies the miraculous, inspiring others to trust in God’s power.

The gift of wisdom, also known as a “word of wisdom,” is a supernatural ability given by the Holy Spirit to understand and apply divine insight in a specific situation. This gift isn’t just about intellectual knowledge but about Spirit-led discernment that brings clarity and solutions in moments of uncertainty.

I remember a time in ministry when a conflict arose, and no one seemed to have an answer. After praying for wisdom, the Holy Spirit gave me a clear understanding of how to navigate the situation. It wasn’t something I could have come up with on my own… it was truly a gift from God.

Godly Insight for Decision-Making: The gift of wisdom provides direction that aligns with God’s truth and purposes.

Clarity in Confusion: This gift often brings peace and resolution in the midst of complex or difficult situations.

A Testimony to God’s Power: When we operate in the gift of wisdom, it reveals the Spirit’s presence and glorifies God.

The Holy Spirit at Pentecost

The day of Pentecost marks a pivotal moment in the New Testament… the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the early church. This event fulfilled Jesus’ promise that the Spirit would come to empower His followers for ministry and witness.

I’ve often thought about how those disciples must have felt as they waited in that upper room. They were faithful, but they didn’t fully understand what was coming. Then, suddenly, the Holy Spirit arrived in power, transforming them from hesitant followers to bold witnesses for Christ.

The Promise Fulfilled: Jesus promised that the Spirit would come to empower His disciples, and Pentecost was the fulfillment of that promise (John 14:16-17; Acts 1:8).

Empowered Witnesses: The Spirit enabled the disciples to preach the gospel boldly, beginning in Jerusalem and spreading to the ends of the earth (Acts 2:14-41).

The Birth of the Church: Pentecost marked the beginning of the New Testament church, unified and equipped by the Spirit for God’s mission.

The same Spirit who came at Pentecost is still at work today, empowering us to live boldly for Christ and share His gospel with the world.

The Holy Spirit in the Life of Jesus

The Holy Spirit played a vital role in the earthly life and ministry of Jesus. From His conception to His resurrection, the Spirit was actively at work, empowering Jesus to fulfill His mission.

As I reflect on the life of Christ, I’m struck by how dependent He was on the Spirit’s guidance and power. If Jesus, the Son of God, relied on the Spirit, how much more do we need Him in our lives?

The Spirit at Conception: Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, marking the beginning of His earthly mission (Luke 1:35).

The Spirit at Baptism: The Spirit descended upon Him like a dove, affirming His identity and anointing Him for ministry (Matthew 3:16).

The Spirit in Ministry: Jesus performed miracles, preached the gospel, and cast out demons through the power of the Holy Spirit (Luke 4:18).

The Spirit in the Resurrection: The Spirit raised Jesus from the dead, demonstrating His power over sin and death (Romans 8:11).

Calling on the Holy Spirit in our own lives reminds us that the same power that worked in Jesus is available to us today.

Moses: When God Calls the Inadequate

Moses is one of the most remarkable leaders in the Bible, but when God first called him, he didn’t feel up to the task. He had a past he wasn’t proud of, he doubted his abilities, and he didn’t think he was the right person for the job.

I’ve felt that way too. After my divorce, I questioned whether I could still serve in ministry. I wondered if God could use someone who had failed so publicly. Every time I thought about stepping back into leadership, a little voice whispered, “Who do you think you are?”

Moses asked the same question: “Who am I?” But God’s response changed everything: “I will be with you.” (Exodus 3:12) God wasn’t focused on Moses’ qualifications. He was focused on His own power and presence.

That truth gave me the courage to step forward again. God doesn’t call the qualified; He qualifies the called. Like Moses, we might feel inadequate, but our confidence doesn’t come from who we are, it comes from who God is.

If you’re feeling unworthy of God’s calling, remember this: He’s not asking you to do it alone. He’s with you, equipping you for the task He’s set before you.

Moses: Trusting God’s Timing

Moses is one of the most iconic figures in the Bible, yet his journey to leadership wasn’t straightforward. From being raised in Pharaoh’s palace to living as a shepherd in Midian, Moses spent decades waiting before stepping into God’s plan to deliver Israel.

When God called Moses from the burning bush, Moses hesitated. He questioned his ability and even tried to argue with God. But God reminded him that the mission wasn’t about Moses’s strength… it was about God’s power. With every plague, parting the Red Sea, and provision in the wilderness, God proved that He was in control.

Moses’s story reminds us that God’s timing is perfect, even when it feels slow. He uses seasons of waiting to prepare us for His purpose. When we trust His plan and step out in faith, we discover that His strength is more than enough.

Our Son’s 24th Birthday: Stepping into Leadership

Today our son turns 24, and this year has been one of growth, leadership, and incredible milestones. Being invited to Sergeant School at Fort Jackson is a testament to his hard work, character, and leadership skills. Watching him step into this role has been one of the proudest moments of my life.

As a family, we had the joy of celebrating his graduation together. Seeing him achieve this milestone was a reminder of how God’s faithfulness and our son’s dedication have brought him to this point. His humility and servant’s heart make him a true leader, reflecting Christ in all he does.

The prayer for our son is that he continues to lead with integrity, compassion, and faith, trusting God to guide him in every decision. I know God has incredible plans for him, and I can’t wait to see how the Lord continues to work through our son’s life.

Onesimus: A Life Transformed

Onesimus’s story, found in Paul’s letter to Philemon, is a beautiful testament to the transformative power of the gospel. Onesimus was a runaway slave who had wronged his master, Philemon, but through Paul’s ministry, he encountered Christ and was forever changed.

Paul described Onesimus as “useless” in the past but now “useful” to both him and Philemon, a play on Onesimus’s name, which means “useful.” This transformation wasn’t just about a change in behavior; it was a change in identity. As a follower of Christ, Onesimus became a beloved brother in the faith, no longer defined by his past mistakes.

Onesimus reminds us that God’s grace can redeem any situation. No matter how far we’ve run or how broken our story feels, God can use us for His purposes. Through Christ, we are made new, and our lives can become a testimony of His power and love.
