Understanding Medical Marijuana: CBD vs. THC (Part 1)

The conversation around medical marijuana is complex, with passionate arguments on both sides. As Christians, it’s important to approach this topic with both wisdom and discernment. One key distinction often overlooked is the difference between CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the two primary compounds in marijuana.

CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it doesn’t alter your mental state. Research suggests it can offer potential benefits for conditions like epilepsy, anxiety, and chronic pain. On the other hand, THC is psychoactive, responsible for the “high” associated with marijuana. While THC has medical uses, its mind-altering effects raise significant concerns, especially from a biblical perspective.

The Bible calls us to remain sober-minded (1 Peter 5:8) and to glorify God in all we do. THC’s ability to numb pain and alter perception can lead to dependency, masking deeper emotional or spiritual issues rather than addressing them. As believers, we must ask: Are we seeking true healing, or just temporary relief? God’s plan for us includes clarity of mind and a dependence on Him, not substances.

Reflection Questions

  1. How does understanding the difference between CBD and THC shape your perspective on medical marijuana?
  2. In what ways can you seek God’s wisdom when making decisions about health and wellness?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for giving us wisdom to navigate complex issues like medical marijuana. Teach me to discern what aligns with Your will and to seek solutions that honor You. Help me to trust in Your healing power and to share Your truth with love and grace. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The Christian Response to Marijuana Legalization

Marijuana legalization is spreading quickly, leaving many Christians wondering how to respond. As someone who’s fought hard against recreational marijuana use, I’ve seen the long-term consequences it can have on individuals and families.

The world may embrace marijuana as a harmless trend, but as believers, we’re called to a higher standard. Romans 12:2 reminds us not to conform to the patterns of the world but to seek God’s will. Substances like marijuana, which alter our minds and impair judgment, don’t align with God’s call for self-control and clarity.

This isn’t about being judgmental. It’s about recognizing the danger of normalizing something that can lead to addiction, complacency, and a disconnection from God’s purpose. We must approach this issue with compassion, offering alternatives and pointing people to the ultimate healer: Jesus Christ.

As this trend continues to grow, let’s commit to standing firm in our convictions while extending grace to those who may see things differently. Together, we can be a light in a culture that often chooses escape over truth.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to live in a way that reflects Your truth. Help us to stand firm in our convictions while showing compassion to those who are struggling. Guide us to be a light in a world that often chooses darkness. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The Spiritual Impact of Marijuana Use

Some argue that marijuana enhances their spiritual experiences or helps them feel closer to God. However, the Bible calls us to be filled with the Holy Spirit rather than seeking external substances for peace or enlightenment. True spiritual growth comes from abiding in Christ and meditating on His Word. Marijuana’s mind-altering effects can create a false sense of connection, leading individuals away from the true source of life.

Reflection Questions

  1. How can you distinguish between true spiritual growth and artificial experiences?
  2. What steps can you take to rely solely on the Holy Spirit for guidance?

Prayer

Father, help me to seek You with all my heart and trust in Your Spirit for wisdom and peace. May I never substitute temporary highs for the eternal joy found in You. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Addressing the Trend of Medical Marijuana

As medical marijuana becomes increasingly accepted across the nation, many Christians are grappling with how to respond. I’ve been asked repeatedly, “If it’s prescribed by a doctor, doesn’t that make it okay?”

My answer always starts with this: Just because something is legal or recommended doesn’t mean it’s beneficial… or honoring to God. While I acknowledge the potential benefits of CBD, THC is a different story. It alters the mind, creating a false sense of relief while failing to address the deeper issues people face.

Marijuana may provide temporary comfort, but we have to ask ourselves: At what cost? It numbs pain but doesn’t heal. It offers escape but not freedom. As believers, we’re called to avoid being mastered by anything that dulls our ability to live fully for Christ.

I believe God has given us wisdom and resources to find solutions that align with His principles. Instead of turning to substances that impair judgment, we can seek holistic approaches that address both the physical and spiritual aspects of healing.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us discernment in a world that blurs the lines between right and wrong. Help us to honor You in our choices and to seek healing that reflects Your design. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The High That Keeps Us Low (Part 2)

Date: August 16, 2021

Bible Verse:

“You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth?” (Galatians 5:7, NIV)

Message (Part 2):

Michael’s story didn’t change overnight. In fact, it hasn’t really changed at all. Despite his friends’ and pastors’ efforts to help him, Michael remains in the same cycle. He continues to stay high 24/7, using legal and illegal marijuana along with THC gummies. And while he claims it’s not his “conviction” to quit, the impact is undeniable.

Michael still works, but the lines between his work life and his habit have blurred. He’s surrounded by others who normalize the same behaviors, making it even harder for him to see how far he’s drifted. His memory issues have grown worse… he’ll start a conversation and forget what he wanted to say halfway through. When it comes to anything important, he avoids the discussion altogether, brushing it off with a joke or a quick change of subject.

His anxiety, which he says marijuana helps him manage, seems to have grown worse instead of better. He constantly feels on edge, worried about things that never used to bother him. He struggles to plan for the future because the present feels overwhelming enough.

Michael’s health continues to decline, though he refuses to acknowledge it. Low blood pressure, low heart rate, and chronic fatigue have become his normal, but instead of seeking help, he blames it on stress or other factors. Prescriptions that might offer real relief are turned down in favor of his routine.

Spiritually, Michael is stuck in a difficult place. He loves God and serves faithfully in his church, volunteering and contributing in ways that inspire others. But no one realizes he’s high when he does it. For the past eight years, this has been his norm. To those around him, Michael is dependable and kind, but they don’t see the internal struggles, the anxiety, the compromise, the quiet ache of knowing there’s more to life than this cycle.

What’s hardest to watch is the disconnect. Michael’s potential is enormous, he’s talented, charismatic, and capable of so much more than he’s allowing himself to pursue. But he’s hiding behind the high, letting it numb him instead of facing the deeper issues.

I often think of Galatians 5:7: “You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth?” Michael was running a good race, but somewhere along the way, he allowed something to pull him off course. And now, he’s stuck, unable, or unwilling, to take the first step back.

There’s still hope for Michael, as there is for all of us. God’s grace is bigger than any habit, any failure, any setback. But the first step has to come from him. Acknowledging that the high he’s holding onto is keeping him low and trusting God to show him a better way.

If you’re in a similar place, let me remind you: God isn’t angry with you. He loves you deeply and longs to set you free. But freedom starts with surrender. Letting go of the things that keep us stuck and trusting Him to guide us forward.

Bible Promise:

God offers strength to let go and find freedom.

“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13, NIV)

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unfailing love and patience. For those of us who feel stuck, help us to see the chains holding us back and give us the courage to surrender them to You. Teach us to trust You for freedom and healing. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Medical Marijuana: Separating Fact from Fiction

  2. How can you support loved ones struggling with substance use?

Father, give us wisdom to discern truth from deception. Help us to encourage others toward healing and wholeness in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Standing Firm Against Marijuana

The growing push to legalize marijuana, both recreationally and medically, has sparked countless debates in our communities. As someone who’s been part of the National Stomp Out Smoking campaign and the fight for the 2006 Clean Indoor Air Act in Arkansas, I’ve seen firsthand how harmful substances can devastate lives.

While advocates tout marijuana’s potential benefits, it’s important to distinguish between its components. CBD, a non-psychoactive compound, has shown promise in treating certain conditions without the mind-altering effects. However, THC, the compound responsible for the “high,” raises significant concerns. It doesn’t heal, it numbs. It masks pain instead of addressing its root cause, offering a temporary escape rather than real solutions.

As Christians, we’re called to honor God with our bodies, treating them as temples of the Holy Spirit. Substances that alter our minds or lead us to escape reality undermine this calling. Our denomination, the Assembly of God, takes a firm stance on this issue, placing marijuana in the same category as alcohol: something to be avoided because it impairs judgment and opens the door to destructive habits.

Standing firm against marijuana isn’t about being out of touch, it’s about valuing life, clarity, and God’s design. Let’s continue to advocate for healthier solutions and trust God to provide wisdom and healing without relying on substances that alter who He’s called us to be.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us the wisdom to discern what honors You. Help us to make choices that reflect Your design for our lives and to advocate for solutions that bring true healing. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.
