The Importance of a Name: A Legacy of Strength and Beauty

Names carry weight. They reflect identity, purpose, and even the prayers of those who gave them. Throughout the Bible, names were often deeply symbolic, marking moments of transformation or God’s promises fulfilled. Abraham became the “father of many nations,” Jacob became Israel after wrestling with God, and Jesus, the name above all names, was given to signify salvation.

When my daughter was born, we prayed over her name, seeking one that would reflect the strength and beauty we believed God had placed in her. The name “our daughter” was the result of those prayers, a blend of biblical meaning and personal significance.

The first part, “Jael,” comes from the Bible. Jael’s story in Judges 4-5 is one of strength, courage, and decisive action. In a time when Israel was oppressed, Jael played a pivotal role in defeating Sisera, the commander of the enemy army. She didn’t hesitate or shrink back… she acted boldly, fulfilling a divine purpose. Jael reminds us that strength isn’t about physical might but about trusting God and stepping into His plans with courage.

The second part, “Lynn,” means “beautiful.” It reflects the truth that our daughter is fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). Beauty isn’t just external. It’s about the heart, character, and the light of Christ shining through her.

Her middle name, “Rae,” carries the meaning of “ewe” or “innocent lamb,” symbolizing purity, gentleness, and dedication to God. This imagery reminds me of Christ, the Lamb of God, who calls us to live lives of innocence and devotion to Him.

We combined these meanings to create our daughter: a name that speaks of a strong, beautiful, ascending woman of God.

Before she was even born, we prayed a blessing over her daily:

“our daughter Rae Price, you are a strong, beautiful, ascending woman of God. You are an innocent lamb consecrated to God and a zealous champion. You are above and not beneath, you are the head and not the tail. You are blessed going in and blessed going out, you are more than a conqueror, and no weapon formed against you shall prosper. You are a daughter of the King, a princess, and you are blessed and highly favored.”

This blessing was more than words, it was a declaration of who God created her to be. We spoke life, strength, and purpose into her every day, believing that our words, aligned with God’s truth, would shape her identity and future.

Proverbs 18:21 reminds us, “The tongue has the power of life and death.” What we speak over our children matters. When we name them with intention and declare God’s promises over their lives, we partner with Him in shaping their destiny.

our daughter’s name is a reminder of the power of faith-filled parenting. It’s not just about choosing a name; it’s about speaking life into that name and praying it into existence.

Bible Promise:

God knows us by name and calls us into His purpose. “I have summoned you by name; you are mine.” (Isaiah 43:1, NIV)

Reflection Questions

  1. What does your name mean, and how has it shaped your identity?
  2. Have you spoken God’s promises over the lives of your children or loved ones?
  3. How can you use your words to encourage, bless, and build others up?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the power of a name and the identity You’ve given each of us. Teach me to speak life and blessings over those I love, declaring Your truth and promises. Thank You for knowing us intimately, even before we were born. May our lives reflect the names You’ve given us and the purposes You’ve set before us. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The New Testament Church vs. Modern Churches

The New Testament church was marked by simplicity, unity, and devotion. Acts 2:42 paints a beautiful picture of believers who gathered daily to learn, pray, and share life together. In contrast, many modern churches often focus on programs, buildings, and entertainment.

This isn’t to say modern churches are wrong, but it’s a reminder to evaluate what truly matters. Are we prioritizing fellowship, teaching, and prayer, or are we distracted by outward appearances? The early church thrived because of its focus on Christ and community.

I’ve often reflected on what it would look like to return to this model. A church where relationships come first, where prayer is central, and where every believer is empowered to live out their faith. The New Testament church reminds us that true growth happens when we focus on the essentials and let God do the rest.

Reflection Questions

  1. How does your church reflect the simplicity and devotion of the New Testament church?
  2. What steps can you take to prioritize fellowship, prayer, and teaching in your life?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the example of the New Testament church. Teach me to focus on what truly matters and to build a life centered on fellowship, prayer, and Your Word. Help me to be a part of a community that reflects Your heart and advances Your kingdom. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The Transforming Power of Gratitude

Gratitude has the power to transform our perspective. When we choose to give thanks in all circumstances, as Paul encourages in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, we shift our focus from what’s wrong to what God is doing.

I remember a time when life felt overwhelming. Financial stress, personal challenges, and unanswered prayers clouded my mind. But one morning, as I began to pray, I felt led to list everything I was thankful for. What started as a reluctant exercise became a moment of worship. My circumstances hadn’t changed, but my heart had. Gratitude reminded me of God’s faithfulness and brought peace to my weary soul.

Gratitude isn’t about ignoring struggles; it’s about acknowledging God’s goodness in the midst of them. It transforms our hearts, strengthens our faith, and draws us closer to Him.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are three things you can thank God for today?
  2. How can practicing gratitude transform your outlook on current challenges?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness in every season of life. Teach me to cultivate a heart of gratitude, even in difficult circumstances. Help me to focus on Your goodness and to give thanks for the blessings You’ve provided. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Wishing I Were a Better Parent

Parenting is one of the greatest joys and hardest responsibilities God entrusts to us. As a dad, there have been moments when I’ve felt like I wasn’t enough, like I could have done more, said more, or been more present. Those feelings of inadequacy can be overwhelming.

One day, while praying about these feelings, God reminded me of Proverbs 22:6. My role isn’t to be perfect but to faithfully guide my children in His ways. He is the ultimate Father, and His grace fills the gaps where I fall short.

Wishing we were better parents is natural, but it’s important to remember that God is with us every step of the way. He equips us for the task and works in our children’s lives, even when we don’t see it. Trusting Him with their future allows us to focus on loving and leading them in the present.

Reflection Questions

  1. What areas of parenting do you need to surrender to God?
  2. How can you trust Him more fully with your children’s lives and futures?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the privilege of parenting. Teach me to rely on Your wisdom and grace as I guide my children. Help me to trust You with their lives and to show them Your love through my actions. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The Power of Prayer

I used to think prayer had to be eloquent to be effective. I’d hear others pray these beautifully worded prayers, and I’d think, “I could never pray like that.” For a long time, I struggled to find my voice in prayer. It felt awkward, even forced, as though I had to impress God with the right words.

Then, a life-changing moment shifted my perspective. A friend was in a dire situation, and I didn’t know what to say. All I could manage was, “God, help her. Please show up.” It wasn’t fancy or polished, but it was real. And God answered. He didn’t just show up in her situation; He showed up in my understanding of prayer. I realized it wasn’t about my words; it was about my heart.

Prayer isn’t about perfection; it’s about connection. It’s a conversation with the Creator of the universe who already knows your heart. James 5:16 tells us that the prayers of the righteous are powerful and effective. Not because of our ability but because of God’s faithfulness.

Look at the prayers in the Bible. Elijah prayed for rain, and God sent it. Hannah prayed for a son, and God gave her Samuel. Jesus prayed in the garden, surrendering His will to the Father. In every instance, prayer was the catalyst for God’s power to be displayed.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of prayer. Remind me that it’s not about the words I say but the heart I bring. Help me to trust You in every situation and to pray boldly, knowing that You hear me. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Bearing Each Other’s Burdens

One of the most beautiful aspects of Christian community is bearing each other’s burdens. When we walk alongside one another in difficult seasons, we reflect the love of Christ and fulfill His command to love our neighbors as ourselves.

I’ve seen the power of this firsthand. In times of grief and struggle, the prayers and support of my church family reminded me of God’s faithfulness. Their presence didn’t take away the pain, but it made the burden lighter.

As believers, we’re called to step into each other’s lives with compassion and encouragement. Whether through prayer, practical help, or simply listening, we can be the hands and feet of Jesus to those in need.

Reflection Questions

  1. How has someone in your faith community helped carry your burdens?
  2. Who can you support and encourage in your church or small group today?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the blessing of community and the opportunity to bear one another’s burdens. Teach me to walk alongside others with compassion and love, reflecting Your grace in every interaction. Help me to be a source of encouragement and support. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Letting Others Pour Into You

One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is that I can’t do it all on my own. During those months of stepping back, God placed people in my life who spoke truth, encouraged me, and helped me heal.

Being mentored reminded me that even leaders need guidance. Allowing others to pour into me felt vulnerable, but it was exactly what I needed. Their wisdom and prayers became a lifeline, pointing me back to God when I felt lost.

If you’re in a season of struggle, don’t try to carry it alone. God often works through the people around us, using their experiences and insights to sharpen us. Letting others pour into you isn’t a sign of weakness… it’s a step toward growth and healing.

Reflection Questions

  1. Who has God placed in your life to mentor and encourage you?
  2. How can you open yourself to receiving their wisdom and support?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the people You’ve placed in my life to sharpen and encourage me. Teach me to humbly receive their wisdom and to trust You in the process of growth. Help me to be open to the ways You work through others. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Listening in Prayer

Prayer is not just about talking to God; it’s also about listening. In the quiet moments of stillness, we open our hearts to hear His voice, receive His guidance, and experience His peace.

In a world full of noise, listening in prayer can be challenging. It requires us to set aside distractions and create space to focus on God. I’ve found that when I intentionally pause and listen during prayer, God often reveals insights, encourages my heart, or gently redirects my path.

Listening in prayer teaches us humility and dependence. It reminds us that prayer is a two-way conversation, and God desires to speak to us as much as we desire to speak to Him.

Reflection Questions

  1. How can you create space for stillness and listening in your prayer time?
  2. What has God revealed to you during moments of quiet prayer?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for speaking to me and for inviting me to listen. Teach me to be still and to quiet my heart, so I can hear Your voice clearly. Help me to trust in Your guidance and to walk in obedience to Your will. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

When Life Doesn’t Make Sense

There have been times in my life when nothing made sense. The pain felt pointless, the loss seemed unfair, and my prayers felt unanswered. I wrestled with anger, frustration, and doubt, asking God, “Why is this happening?”

One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is that trusting God doesn’t always mean understanding Him. His ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9), and there are times when His plans are beyond our comprehension.

During one particular storm, I realized I had two choices: to push God away in my confusion or to draw closer to Him in my pain. I chose the latter, even though it was hard. And while the answers didn’t come immediately, His peace did.

God doesn’t promise to explain every detail, but He does promise to walk with us through the valleys. When life doesn’t make sense, He invites us to lean on Him, not our understanding, and to trust that He is still good.

Reflection Questions

  1. What situation in your life feels confusing or unfair right now?
  2. How can you choose to trust God even when you don’t understand His plans?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for being trustworthy even when life doesn’t make sense. Teach me to lean on You and not my own understanding. Help me to find peace in Your presence and to trust Your plans, even when they are unclear. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Building Resilience Through Prayer

Prayer has been my lifeline in the darkest moments of my journey. It’s not just something I do to check a box… it’s the way I cry out to God, pour out my heart, and find the strength to keep moving forward.

Resilience begins in those quiet moments of prayer, where we invite God into our struggles and surrender our burdens to Him. During the nights when I felt most alone, prayer reminded me that I wasn’t abandoned. It became the place where I could release my fears and doubts and be filled with God’s peace.

Building resilience isn’t about avoiding hardship, it’s about cultivating a deep connection with God through prayer. When we stay watchful and thankful, even in the midst of pain, we tap into the unshakable hope that only He can provide.

Reflection Questions

  1. How can prayer help you build resilience during life’s challenges?
  2. What specific burdens can you bring to God in prayer today?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of prayer and the way it strengthens my spirit. Teach me to come to You with every struggle and to trust in Your faithfulness. Help me to stay watchful and thankful, even in the midst of hardship. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.
