Love: The Greatest Commandment

Love is the first fruit of the Spirit, and it’s no surprise why. Jesus said that the greatest commandment is to love God with all our hearts and to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-39). Love is the foundation of everything we do as followers of Christ.

But love isn’t just an emotion, it’s a choice and an action. It’s selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional, mirroring the love God has for us. Yet, loving others isn’t always easy. I’ve struggled to love people who’ve hurt me, disappointed me, or disagreed with me. But in those moments, God reminds me that love isn’t dependent on the other person’s behavior, it’s a reflection of His character in me.

When we allow the Holy Spirit to grow love in our hearts, it changes how we see and treat others. It enables us to forgive, serve, and extend grace, even when it’s hard. Love is what sets us apart as Christians, it’s the fruit that shows the world who Jesus is.

Introduction to the Fruit of the Spirit

What does it mean to bear the fruit of the Spirit? In Galatians 5, Paul contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit, showing us what a life transformed by Christ looks like. The fruit of the Spirit isn’t something we can produce on our own, it’s evidence of the Holy Spirit working in and through us.

Each of the nine traits, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, reflects the character of God. They are interconnected, like the segments of a single fruit, and they grow as we deepen our relationship with Him.

I’ve experienced seasons where one fruit came naturally while others felt like a struggle. But I’ve learned that cultivating the fruit of the Spirit isn’t about striving. It’s about abiding in Christ. As we remain connected to Him, the Holy Spirit does the work of transformation, making us more like Jesus.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll explore each fruit, reflecting on how they can shape our lives and deepen our witness. Let’s open our hearts to the Spirit’s work, trusting Him to bear fruit in us.
