Hagar: Seen by God

Hagar’s story in Genesis 16 is one of heartbreak and hope. As an Egyptian servant, Hagar found herself in a difficult and unjust situation when Sarai (later Sarah) gave her to Abram to bear a child. When tension arose, Hagar fled into the wilderness, feeling abandoned and unseen.

But God met her there. In her lowest moment, the angel of the Lord appeared to Hagar, offering her a promise of blessing and reassurance. Overwhelmed by His care, Hagar gave God a name: El Roi. “the God who sees me.”

Hagar’s story reminds us that God sees us in our pain and meets us with His presence. Even when we feel overlooked or cast aside, God knows our struggles and walks with us. Like Hagar, we can trust that He is always watching over us and working for our good.

A Legacy of Faithfulness

Today, on my birthday, I find myself reflecting on what it means to leave a legacy of faithfulness. Jason, in the Bible, stood firm in his faith and supported the work of God, even when it came at great personal cost. His quiet courage and unwavering obedience inspire me to ask: Am I living a life of faithfulness to God?

Faithfulness isn’t about perfection; it’s about perseverance. It’s about trusting God in every season, using what He has given you to serve His kingdom. Whether it’s through ministry, parenting, or everyday interactions, we are called to live with integrity, love, and purpose.

Looking back on this year, I see areas where I’ve fallen short and areas where God has been so faithful despite my weaknesses. I pray that as I continue to grow, I will honor Him more fully and leave a legacy that reflects His goodness and grace.

Volunteering at Our Daughter’s School

Volunteering is more than just helping. It’s an opportunity to reflect Christ’s love through service. When I began volunteering at our daughter’s school, it wasn’t just about being involved in her life; it was about showing the staff, students, and parents the love of Christ through my actions.

At first, I thought my presence might go unnoticed. But over time, I saw how simple acts of service, whether helping with events, encouraging students, or supporting teachers, opened doors for meaningful conversations and connections. Colossians 3:23 reminded me to approach every task with excellence, as if serving the Lord directly.

Volunteering isn’t just about giving back; it’s about being a light in the community. When we serve with a heart focused on God, our actions become a testimony of His love and faithfulness.

Biblical Examples of Presumptuous Sin

The Bible provides several examples of presumptuous sin. Acts of deliberate rebellion against God’s commands, often with the assumption that His forgiveness or favor will follow. These stories serve as sobering reminders of the consequences of taking God’s grace for granted.

  1. Adam and Eve, The Original Presumption (Genesis 3:1-7)

Adam and Eve knew God’s command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, but they chose to disobey, assuming they could gain wisdom and perhaps avoid the consequences. Their presumption led to the fall of humanity, separation from God, and the need for redemption.

  1. The Israelites Worshiping the Golden Calf (Exodus 32:1-6)

While Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving God’s law, the Israelites grew impatient and demanded a golden calf to worship. Despite their covenant with God, they assumed He would overlook their idolatry. Instead, their sin led to severe consequences, including the death of many and the delay of their journey to the Promised Land.

  1. King Saul’s Disobedience (1 Samuel 13:8-14)

Saul was instructed to wait for the prophet Samuel to offer a sacrifice before battle, but when Samuel delayed, Saul took matters into his own hands. Presuming that God would accept his offering, Saul acted in direct disobedience. As a result, God rejected him as king, showing that partial obedience is still rebellion.

  1. Ananias and Sapphira’s Deception (Acts 5:1-11)

This New Testament example shows how presumptuous sin didn’t end with the Old Covenant. Ananias and Sapphira sold a piece of property and lied about the proceeds, assuming they could deceive the apostles and God without consequence. Their presumption cost them their lives, underscoring the seriousness of willful sin.

  1. Jonah’s Initial Refusal to Go to Nineveh (Jonah 1)

Jonah ran away from God’s command to preach to Nineveh, presuming he could escape God’s will. While God showed mercy and gave Jonah a second chance, his disobedience caused a storm, endangered others, and led to Jonah’s temporary stay in the belly of a great fish.

These stories reveal a common thread: presumptuous sin always leads to separation, consequences, and loss. However, they also highlight God’s mercy for those who genuinely repent.

Our Son’s 24th Birthday: Stepping into Leadership

Today our son turns 24, and this year has been one of growth, leadership, and incredible milestones. Being invited to Sergeant School at Fort Jackson is a testament to his hard work, character, and leadership skills. Watching him step into this role has been one of the proudest moments of my life.

As a family, we had the joy of celebrating his graduation together. Seeing him achieve this milestone was a reminder of how God’s faithfulness and our son’s dedication have brought him to this point. His humility and servant’s heart make him a true leader, reflecting Christ in all he does.

The prayer for our son is that he continues to lead with integrity, compassion, and faith, trusting God to guide him in every decision. I know God has incredible plans for him, and I can’t wait to see how the Lord continues to work through our son’s life.

Leading by Serving: The Heart of True Leadership

Leadership in the church isn’t about power or position… it’s about serving others. Jesus, the ultimate example of leadership, came not to be served but to serve. He washed the feet of His disciples, fed the hungry, and gave His life for humanity. If the King of Kings modeled servant leadership, how much more should we as His followers?

Servant leadership means putting the needs of others above your own. It means leading with humility, empathy, and a heart for God’s people. Whether it’s pastors, ministry leaders, or anyone in a position of influence, true leadership is about building others up and pointing them to Christ.

It’s easy to get caught up in the tasks of leadership, planning events, managing teams, or growing ministries. But at its core, leadership is about relationships. It’s about investing in others, listening to their needs, and encouraging them in their faith journey.

This doesn’t mean leadership is easy. Serving others can be exhausting, especially when you feel unappreciated or overwhelmed. But when we remember that our work is ultimately for God’s glory, it gives us the strength to keep going.

Jesus reminds us in Mark 10:45 that greatness in His kingdom is found in serving. As leaders, let’s strive to follow His example, leading with humility, compassion, and a servant’s heart.

Loving the Least of These

When I volunteered at a local shelter last year, I met a man named David. He’d lost everything, his home, family, and hope. As we talked, I realized how often I take my blessings for granted.

David’s story reminded me of Jesus’ words about serving the least of these. Loving the vulnerable isn’t optional; it’s central to our faith. It’s easy to give out of abundance, but true love means sacrificing time, resources, and comfort to meet the needs of others.

Every time I see someone struggling, I think of David. And I pray to see them as Jesus does.

Epaphroditus: A Faithful Servant in the Shadows

Epaphroditus may not be as well-known as Paul or Timothy, but his faithfulness and dedication are a powerful example for all believers. He was sent by the Philippian church to assist Paul, risking his own health to serve the apostle during his imprisonment.

Paul describes Epaphroditus as a “brother, co-worker, and fellow soldier,” emphasizing his humility, service, and commitment to the gospel. Though he served behind the scenes, his work was vital to the spread of the gospel and the encouragement of the early church.

Epaphroditus reminds us that God values faithfulness over recognition. You don’t have to be in the spotlight to make a difference in God’s kingdom. By serving humbly and selflessly, you reflect Christ’s love and advance His mission in ways you may never fully see.

I’ve often found myself overwhelmed by the chaos of the world, news, opinions, and cultural pressures pulling in every direction. But when I turn to God’s Word, I find the peace and direction I need. The Bible doesn’t just provide answers; it provides the ultimate truth, guiding us to live in alignment with God’s will.

The world’s confusion can never outweigh the clarity of Scripture. When we immerse ourselves in God’s Word, we discover His timeless principles that bring order to our lives. It’s not just a lamp for our feet, it’s a lifeline for our souls.
