Trusting God With the First Fruits

The principle of tithing is rooted in the concept of firstfruits, giving God the first and best of what we have. Proverbs 3:9 calls us to honor the Lord with our wealth by offering the firstfruits of our labor. It’s a way of putting God first in our lives, acknowledging that everything we have belongs to Him.

Giving God the first 10% of our income can feel counterintuitive, especially when finances are tight. But when we prioritize God, He blesses the remaining 90% in ways we can’t always see. Tithing isn’t about what God wants from us. It’s about what He wants for us: a life of trust, obedience, and provision.

In my own life, I’ve seen how putting God first in my finances has deepened my faith and reminded me of His faithfulness. Tithing is an act of worship, declaring that God is our ultimate provider and that we trust Him to meet every need.

Reflection Questions

  1. How does giving God your “firstfruits” demonstrate your faith and priorities?
  2. In what ways has God shown His faithfulness when you’ve trusted Him with your finances?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the principle of firstfruits and the opportunity to honor You with my resources. Teach me to trust You with the first and best of what I have, knowing that You are faithful to provide. Help me to walk in obedience and to reflect Your generosity to others. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Forgiveness: Letting Go of Resentment

Forgiveness. It’s one of the hardest things God asks of us, yet it’s also one of the most freeing. I’ll be honest, this is a lesson I’ve had to learn repeatedly, especially after the hurt I’ve experienced over the past few years.

When my ex-wife left, I felt a deep sense of betrayal. The wounds from our divorce weren’t just emotional; they were spiritual, too. I wrestled with God, asking Him how I was supposed to forgive someone who had shattered the vows we made before Him. It felt impossible.

But then I remembered Jesus’ words: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34). Even as He hung on the cross, betrayed and abandoned, Jesus chose forgiveness. If He could forgive in the face of such pain, how could I hold on to my bitterness?

Forgiveness isn’t about excusing what happened or pretending the hurt doesn’t exist. It’s about releasing the weight of resentment so it doesn’t consume you. I realized that my anger wasn’t hurting my ex-wife, it was hurting me. I was the one carrying the burden, and it was keeping me from experiencing the fullness of God’s peace.

It wasn’t easy, and it didn’t happen overnight. Forgiveness is a process, one that requires prayer and surrender. I had to bring my pain to God daily, asking Him to soften my heart and give me the strength to let go. Over time, He replaced my bitterness with compassion.

Forgiving my ex-wife doesn’t mean I approve of her choices, but it does mean I’m free. I can look at her now without the heaviness of anger or resentment. And more importantly, I can focus on being the father kiddo needs, without the distraction of unresolved hurt.

If you’re struggling to forgive someone, I encourage you to take it to God. It’s okay to admit it’s hard, He already knows. But as you release the pain to Him, He’ll help you heal. Forgiveness doesn’t change the past, but it transforms your future.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, forgiveness is hard, but I know You’ve called me to let go of resentment and bitterness. Help me to forgive as You’ve forgiven me. Soften my heart and give me the strength to release the pain I’m holding on to. Thank You for the freedom that comes from living in Your grace. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

The Heart of Giving

Tithing isn’t just a financial transaction… it’s a reflection of our heart. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, Paul reminds us that God loves a cheerful giver. Giving out of obligation or guilt misses the point; true giving comes from a place of gratitude and joy.

When we tithe, we’re saying, “God, I trust You. Thank You for all You’ve given me.” It’s an opportunity to participate in God’s work, supporting ministries, churches, and those in need. More importantly, it aligns our hearts with God’s, teaching us to value generosity over greed.

I’ve learned that cheerful giving isn’t always easy, especially during tight financial seasons. But when we give joyfully, we discover that God’s blessings go far beyond material provision. He transforms our hearts, deepens our trust, and uses our gifts to impact His kingdom.

Reflection Questions

  1. How does your attitude toward giving reflect your trust in God?
  2. What steps can you take to become a cheerful giver?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the opportunity to give and to participate in Your work. Teach me to give with a cheerful heart, trusting in Your provision and purpose. Help me to honor You through my generosity and to reflect Your love to others. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Why Tithing Matters to God

Tithing is one of the most misunderstood and debated practices in the church, yet it remains a powerful way to honor God and acknowledge His provision in our lives. In Malachi 3:10, God not only commands tithing but invites us to test Him in this area, promising blessings in return.

Tithing is not about the money, it’s about the heart. When we give the first 10% of our income to God, we declare that He is our provider and that we trust Him to meet our needs. It’s an act of worship, reminding us that everything we have comes from Him.

I’ve experienced seasons of financial uncertainty where tithing felt like a sacrifice, but every time I’ve trusted God in this area, He’s shown His faithfulness. Tithing isn’t just about obedience. It’s about experiencing God’s provision, faithfulness, and blessing in ways we couldn’t imagine.

Help me to give with a joyful heart, knowing that everything I have belongs to You. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Sharing the Gospel with Grace and Truth

When sharing the gospel, it’s essential to balance grace and truth. Jesus modeled this perfectly, offering compassion to sinners while never compromising God’s standards. As His followers, we are called to do the same.

Speak Truth Boldly: The gospel is the truth that sets people free. Never shy away from sharing the reality of sin, repentance, and salvation through Jesus Christ.

Offer Grace Freely: While truth is necessary, it must always be delivered with love. Harshness can close hearts, but grace opens the door for meaningful conversations.

Follow Jesus’ Example: Jesus met people where they were, addressing their deepest needs with compassion while calling them to a higher standard. We are called to follow His lead.

By sharing the gospel with both grace and truth, we reflect the heart of Christ and create opportunities for lives to be transformed by His love.

Being a Godly Friend to Others

Friendship is a two-way street. While it’s important to surround ourselves with godly influences, it’s equally important to be that influence for others. Proverbs 17:17 reminds us that a true friend loves at all times, offering support, encouragement, and grace.

Being a godly friend means reflecting Christ in how we listen, speak, and act. It means showing up in times of need, offering forgiveness when wronged, and speaking truth in love, even when it’s hard. True friendship isn’t about convenience. It’s about commitment.

In my own friendships, I’ve learned that being a godly friend often requires sacrifice. It means putting someone else’s needs above my own and being intentional in how I invest in the relationship. When we model Christ’s love, our friendships become a testimony of His grace.

Ask yourself: How can I reflect God’s love in my friendships today? By being faithful, forgiving, and supportive, we can point our friends to the ultimate friend… Jesus.

Reflection Questions

  1. How can you be a better friend to those God has placed in your life?
  2. What practical steps can you take to reflect Christ in your friendships?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the opportunity to be a godly friend to others. Teach me to love, serve, and encourage those around me with Your grace and truth. Help me to point my friends to You, the ultimate source of love and friendship. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.

Gratitude in Difficult Seasons

Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays. But a few years ago, during my separation, it felt impossible to be thankful. I sat at the dinner table, surrounded by family, but my heart was heavy. I couldn’t shake the feeling that my life had fallen apart.

After dinner, I slipped away to a quiet corner and opened my Bible. I stumbled upon 1 Thessalonians 5:18: “Give thanks in all circumstances.” I remember thinking, “How, God? How do I give thanks when everything feels broken?”

That night, I started a gratitude list. Not because I felt thankful, but because I needed to remind myself of God’s goodness. I wrote down simple things: our daughter’s laugh, a roof over my head, the meal we’d just shared. As the list grew, my perspective began to shift. My circumstances hadn’t changed, but my heart had. Gratitude has a way of opening our eyes to God’s faithfulness, even in the hardest seasons.

Now, I make it a habit to practice gratitude daily. Some days it’s easier than others, but there’s always something to thank God for. Even in our pain, He is present. Even in our struggles, He is good.

If you’re walking through a difficult season, start small. Write down one thing you’re thankful for today. You’ll be amazed at how gratitude can transform your heart.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithfulness, even in the hardest seasons. Open my eyes to see the blessings You’ve placed in my life, and teach me to give thanks in all circumstances. I give You all honor, all the glory, and all the praise. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen & Amen.
