I used to tell myself, “I’m just here for the beat. The lyrics don’t really matter.” It was an easy justification. If the rhythm was catchy and the melody was memorable, I convinced myself that what I was listening to didn’t affect me.
But over time, I realized something: even when I wasn’t consciously paying attention to the lyrics, they were still influencing me. The words were planting seeds in my heart, seeds of negativity, lust, or anger, that grew without me realizing it.
Music is powerful. It bypasses our defenses and goes straight to the heart. That’s why God calls us to guard our hearts. If the beat is great but the message is harmful, it can still impact our thoughts and actions. Choosing music that aligns with God’s truth isn’t about being overly cautious; it’s about protecting what matters most, our relationship with Him.
